Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913

Making March

This past week brought to my mind several March occasions and how they were recognized not many years ago.

I am sure that there are many Glasgow residents who remember a local attorney who always recognized St Patrick’s Day by presenting many locals with a green carnation. Since this gentleman was Irish I am sure it was his way of reminding us of this important day recognizing the Irish. Maybe his enthusiasm for the day inspired others to join in by sporting fun green attire.

Corned beef and cabbage still seems to be on the menu for many and I am sure that you can still find green beer to finish things off.

Ag week is another March event that seems to pass unnoticed. Remember when the Valley Co. Cowbelles served beef tidbits in the local groceries on Ag Day with sign up for prizes of beef awarded to the lucky winners?

A lot of the local businesses recognized this day with displays, sales and other events. I think there might have been a time when the area held an Ag Appreciation Dinner, but do not know if this fell in March recognizing Ag Day, or at another time.

The WIFE group was also active in promoting agriculture with contests in local schools, etc.

I remember an Ag Bumper Sticker contest held in the grade schools throughout the State with the winners getting to have breakfast or some such with the governor of the state. I do remember one of the contest winners wondered if they would get to go to McDonald’s for breakfast. I am sure that would have been a real treat since Glasgow may not have had a McDonald’s at that time.

This year, the month of March also brings us Palm Sunday and Easter. If anyone has memories of Easter that makes that particular Easter stand out in your memories please feel free to share.

Just a reminder that the next month starts off with a fun day. Now is the time to be thinking of those April Fool’s pranks and making your plans!
