Decisive Win over Poplar Brings Scotties Closer to Tournament

The Scottie boys rose to the occasion and got the win they needed. And they didn't just scrape by with coming-down-to-the-wire free throws. They beat the Poplar Indians by 15 points at the Moccasin Square Garden on Jan. 29. It was their highest winning margin over a conference foe so far this season.

Any conference win they can muster will help them avoid the playoff game between the fourth and fifth seeds, a game in which the loser will be barred from the district tournament. The tournament is coming up in two weeks at Glasgow High School, for both boys and girls.

The Scotties did lose to Class A Dawson County the next day at home, 43-27. The non-conference game against the tall and veteran Red Devils was treated more like a team practice on offense, for all intents and purposes.

At 3-2 conference and 5-9 overall, the Scotties have two games coming up this week. They will travel to take on the Nashua Porcupines on Thursday, Feb. 4 for some more fine-tuning, then host the Harlem Wildcats on Friday, Feb. 5, also the Senior Night.

Three Scottie seniors will be honored: Ethan Etchart, Chase Hughes, and Zach Miller.

The 37-36 loss to Harlem on Jan. 9 was a setback for the Scotties. If the Scotties avenge the tough loss this Friday, they are sure to enter the district tournament with quite favorable seeding.

"Harlem is similar to Poplar and can be explosive," said Scottie head coach Norm Braaten. "And we had trouble with their 3-2 zone last time. We just have to take care of the ball and execute our offense." Braaten also mentioned that junior Luke Breigenzer might be able to rejoin the crew this week. Breigenzer had been out for two weeks for a foot injury.

The Scotties came out with high energy and played well on both ends of the court. They dominated on the board and converted many second-chance shots. Defensively, they crippled the Indians' ability to penetrate from the paint, and held the Indians to a fairly low shooting percentage from the perimeter, including only two three-pointers. Just as importantly, turnovers weren't an issue.

Glasgow got ahead right from the start on a 16-6 run in the first quarter. After the 26-18 halftime, the Scotties kept the momentum rolling and outscored Poplar 14-10 in the third quarter and 21-18 in the fourth.

Even though Poplar came alive in the fourth and surged with acrobatic drives from senior Connor Ogle, who piled on nine points in that quarter, running their offense methodically and making the bonus free throws (11-12) was how the Scotties widened the lead as Poplar's long shots continued to fail.

"It was a great win for us. The kids passed the ball well and hit some open shots," said Braaten. "They put up great defense and really limited Poplar's outside shooting. We were also aggressive on rebounds and that gave us more opportunities. " Braaten mentioned that senior Zach Miller grabbed at least 10 or 11 rebounds.

Senior Ethan Etchart and sophomore Bryce Legare led the Scotties with 14 points each. Also contributing to the scoreboard were Zach Miller with 12 points, Trent Herbert 9, Cade Myrick 8, and Tyler Hersom 4.

For the Indians, Ogle was the high scorer with 18 points. Waylon Youpee added 13, Kenny Smoker 5, Orlando Young 4, Boy Youngman 3, Damon Sadler 2, and Coy Atkinson 1.

It was a tighter game than the final score showed. Glasgow did pull within three during the second quarter, and two during the third; however, Glendive would rouse and run away with unanswered points.

In spite of 12-point effort from Etchart, the Red Devils did much damage in the first quarter by outscoring the Scotties 14-7, and in the third quarter, 14-6. The other two quarters saw the Scotties hang right in there, thanks to their strong D.

Five of Scotties' 11 field goals were three-pointers. The team went 0-4 on the free-throw line, however.

It should be noted that Pacyn Partridge, a freshman on the Red Devils' starting lineup, was a Glasgow native who moved away in fourth grade.

In addition to Etchart, five other Scotties scored for the team: Hersom had five points, Legare 3, Miller 3, Herbert 2, and Brayden Ross 2.

Carson Oakland led Dawson County with 15 points, followed by Jarod Asche 12, Taylor Conrad 5, Cody Rossi 5, Partridge 4, and Bret Vester 2.
