Before 4-Wheelers

Do you remember the days when most of the livestock feeding during the winter months was done using a team of horses or mules? Once there was snow on the ground a Bobsled was used. Most of us can picture a team of horses pulling a wagon. Thanks to various members of our community we have had the privilege of seeing a team of horses pulling a wagon, usually at Christmas time or parades. The wagons used for feeding on snow did not have 4X4 drive, but were equipped with sled runners both front and back allowing for easier pulling. Feeding livestock every day during the winter does get to be a monotonous job after awhile, but after a week or so the “horse knew the way to carry the sleigh.” You could secure the reins to the sled, allowing the driver the ability to throw the feed off to the livestock while still moving. I am sure the present day rancher gets tired of his every day chore also, but he no longer has to trudge to the barn, harness the team (this is at least 2 horses), hook up to the sled and proceed to the hay stack. Oh, consider the winter clothing this person must have worn. No cabs on sleds. I remember a wonderful neighbor who would stop by our house many days going to or coming from feeding. He wrapped his feet with newspaper to help keep them warm. Yes, there are drawbacks to our present day method of feeding also, but I am sure not many would change the present for the past.
