Lady Mavs Too Fierce Despite Great Scotty Defense
Another away game and another win for the Lady Scotties. Defeating the class A Sidney Eagles with a score of 51-39, the Scotties increased their win-loss record to 3-1.
The Lady Eagles outscored the Scotties in the first quarter, but once Glasgow claimed the lead, they didn't let go. Coach Kolstad attributed their success to a high free throw percentage and a decrease in overall turnovers in the game.
Leading scorers for the Scotties in Sidney were Abbi Kolstad with 20 and Tyra Johnson with 11. Leinie Hughes contributed with 9, Khloe Krumwiede 7, and Jordan Kulczyk 4.
Coach Kolstad was complimentary of the girls and their win against the Eagles. "It was a big win against a quality team," he said.
The Friday night game against the Lady Mavericks wasn't as successful and definitely wasn't easy.
The first half of the game for the Scotties was pretty flat offensively, with the girls only scoring 10 points. Returning from the locker room after the half, the girls picked up the pace and scored 19 more points.
Defensively, Coach Kolstad tasked Kulczyk and sophomore Demi Aune with shutting down the Maverick's standout player, Tatum Moore. The strategy paid off, as the girls held her to a mere 15 points in the game.
Despite the heavy attention from the Scotties, Moore was the leading scorer for the Lady Mavs with her 15 points. Mickayla Johnson contributed 7 points, Jada Sudbrack 4, and Bailey Funk and Casity Boucher both had 3. Leading the Scotties in scoring again was senior Kolstad with 11 points. Picking up the remaining points were Kulczyk 7, Krumwiede 6, and Hughes 5.
Glasgow earned 19 fouls and lost Krumwiede to her fifth foul in the fourth quarter. Nearly half of Moore's points were from free throws in the fourth quarter alone. "Tatum knows how to get to the line," explained Coach Kolstad. "We weren't able to draw the fouls."
Despite the tough defense, Glasgow was ultimately unable to claim a win over their opponent and the typical determination of a class C team. The Lady Mavs prevailed with a final score of 32-29, and the Lady Scotties walked away with a 3-2 overall record.
The girls' next game is against Poplar after the Christmas break. "If we move the ball around and play good defense, we'll be fine," said Kolstad. During the break, the team will be working on becoming more aggressive in the zone and revisiting some fundamentals to reduce game turnovers, among other things.
