She was born and raised in Glasgow to Edwin H. and Myrtle (Walker) Stedtfeld, and graduated from Glasgow High School in 1955. Following graduation, she married Jim Cole. They continued to live in Glasgow and later moved to Washington state. While in Glasgow she worked in her dad's meat market, Stedtfeld Meats, and in Tacoma she enjoyed working as breakfast hostess for Days Inn.
While living on the family farm in Glasgow, she developed a great love for horses and loved to ride in the Glasgow parades and go horseback riding with her friends. She enjoyed singing and learned to play the steel guitar, and could she yodel! She liked Elvis' music and the old hymns. She loved to laugh and have fun and her dry humor and quips kept others laughing throughout her final days. For the last several years she kept up with events by reading The Glasgow Courier. She also enjoyed reading poetry, did some writing, and sent out many thoughtful notes to family and friends. Her letters were always colorful, descriptive and interesting.
She was thoughtful, unselfish and liked to do special, little things for others. What were most important to her were her faith in God, her family, and her friends. She was especially thankful for the loving care of her grandson, Michael Hall, who lived with her during her final years. Fernie will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, and daughter Beverly (Nonnie) Olson.
Survivors include one son, Jubal Cole and his wife, Diana, of Glasgow; one daughter, Jana Cole of the family home; four grandsons and three granddaughters; 14 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Richard Stedtfeld and his wife, Ruth, of Great Falls, Eddie Stedtfeld of Summerville, Ore., and John Stedtfeld and his wife, Elaine, of Loon Lake, Wash .; sisters Bonnie Coon and her husband, Jim, of Ocean Shores, Wash., and Wanda Whitney of Ocean Shores, Wash.
