Cross Country Winds Its Way Through Glendive Meet

Slow Times Belie Strong Team Results

Both the boys' and girls' cross country squads braved the smoky atmosphere Friday afternoon at the Glendive Invitational en route to respective second and fourth-place finishes.

The girls, having graduated three leading runners from the 2014 team and missing four seniors due to MHSA practice regulations, nevertheless placed four runners in their meet's top 20. Faith Sallee (23:53, 14th) was the first Scottie to cross the finish line; on her heels was Alex Simensen (15th), who missed breaking the 24-minute plateau by three seconds.

"Our team is younger this year," said junior Morgan Guttenberg, who finished 20th in the girls' race with a time of 24:45, "but the girls are stepping up. We had four pretty fast girls who didn't run in Glendive, so when we have the whole team in Billings we should do really well."

Overall, the top five girls finishers totaled 92 points, a showing which slipped them into fourth, one point the better of Miles City.

In the boys' race, senior Walker Allen took 12th with an 18:44, and as the girls had, the team placed four runners in the race's top twenty finishers.

"We have five seniors," said Allen, who clocked over 250 miles this summer in training for the season, "and our freshman are looking really strong."

Even when counting only the Scotties' top four – Allen, Gabe Hallock (19:19, 17th), Braden Meland (19:25, 18th), and Ellis McKean (19:26, 19th) – the group's 66-point tally nearly doubles first-place Glendive's five-man total of 35. A "perfect race," in which a team's top five runners place first-through-fifth, yields a score of fifteen. With Ethan Jamba's 28th-place effort factored in, Glasgow's number soars to 94; still, the result was strong enough for the team to place second, holding off Dickinson by nine.

Though he exceeded his target time of 17 minutes, Allen was content with his result on the slow, grassy course amid the 93-degree heat and smoky air. His personal goal for the season is to break 16 minutes; he holds higher aspirations still for his team.

"We're pushing for a trophy," he said. "The girls have been dominant, [and] it's time for the boys to get to the podium."

The team next races Friday, Sept. 4, in Billings.
