Exhibiting Creativity

Last Saturday there was a flea market in Glasgow. As I looked around at what people had brought to sell, I was struck by the thought of how creative people can be. There were several tables with handmade jewelry. One vendor had collages she had made that could be framed and put up on a wall. Each one featured pictures that had words of emotions as the theme. For instance, one dealt with hope, another with family, and so forth. They all made a person stop and think what the words meant to them.

Then I got to thinking about handmade items entered into the fair. I always enjoy touring the arts and crafts and culinary departments. Many times I’ve thought about entering some things at the fair but have not followed through on that thought. However, this year I did enter several items. I’ve yet to see if any of them garnered a ribbon for me.

I’m always amazed at the creativity of young people. They see things so differently than how adults see them. There are times I feel that adults could learn from the children about how to look at the world around them.

Observing what the young folks enter, I can’t help wondering how much they will improve on their talents as they grow and become an adult. Will they maintain their ability to really see what’s around them or will it diminsh over the years?

The creativity I’ve seen shows me how well people are able to express their thoughts through pictures they’ve taken, quilts they’ve made, pictures they’ve painted, food they’ve prepared, and more.

I think we all have creativity in us. It’s interersting to see what some people do with their creativity. At times I’ve shook my head at how brilliant some of the ideas are.

To me, creativity and imagination go hand in hand. If you are able to imagine what something should look like and do, then you can create it. The two words beg the question: If you can’t imagine how something should be can you still create it?

So I’m off to the fair to see if my creativity has shown through in what I entered. Even if I haven’t won a ribbon on any of the items, I’ll still have the pleasure of knowing I felt what I made was worthy of sharing with other people and acted on that thought.
