Glasgow's Cherry Creek Roping Arena and Club hosted the Wrangler Team Roping Championships last weekend, June 20 and 21. According to Del Hansen, a member of the Cherry Creek Roping Club, about 525 roping teams from Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, and Canada competed for cash and various sponsored prizes.
Many ropers from northeast Montana who often compete with the local Cherry Creek Roping Club placed well. Kent Christensen of Scobey, header, and Darryl Crowley of Poplar, heeler, won the Sr. #6 competition with a time of 28.35/3, winning trophy spur straps as well as a cash prize. The Christensen/Crowley team also took second in the #7 Gold Digger competition with a time of 19.63/2. Crowley also served as heeler to Mike Schmitz and placed third in the Sr. #6 event.
In Round 1 of the Open Draw Pot, John Graham of Glasgow was heeler for Ryan Busse's header, and they won first place with a time of 8.40. Dillon Pankratz of Glasgow, header, partnered up with Tom Jorgenson as heeler and came in third with a time of 59.96/4.
Dave Madison of Glasgow, heeler, placed second with Jeremy Ross as header in the #6 event with a time of 30.68/3.
In the #5 event, Tony Anderson, header, and Mike Forest, heeler, both of Glasgow, took second with a time of 30.04/3. They were awarded trophy buckles. Dave Madison, header, with John Winter, heeler, placed third with a time of 31.34/3 and won Go Rope Trophy shirts. Myron Malnaa of Glasgow, header, with Herb Harris, heeler, placed fifth with 38.18/3.
In the #4 event, Dustin Pankratz, header, and Callahan Belling, heeler, both of Glasgow, had a winning round time of 7.6. Dustin Pankratz, header, and Wes Kirkaldie, heeler, also earned the highest average at 31.07/3, thereby winning trophy saddles and Preifert plaques. As header, Dustin Pankratz also took fifth with Spencer Snow, heeler, at 35.42/3, and seventh with Cory Foss, heeler, at 36.42/3.
