Don't Forget the 2nd Annual Can-Am Fort Peck Lake Sailing Regatta in August
As part of the 15th annual worldwide Summer Sailstice, on the weekend of June 20, the weekend closest to the summer solstice, the Fort Peck Lake Sailing Club will join sailors around the world to celebrate sailing "together."
Current or prospective sailors are invited down to their docks to get on the water under sail or to contribute by demonstrating the best of the sailing world.
Julie Burke of the Fort Peck Lake Sailing Club is planning to kick off another great season with the Summer Sailstice. The Club hosted the maiden voyage of the first local Laser Regatta last year where eight racing dinghies competed on the waters of Fort Peck. To be held later this August, the second annual Can-Am Fort Peck Lake Sailing Regatta already has 13 laser boats entered thus far. If enough interest is gathered from other types of boats, more racing classes might be added. "We are hoping to grow," said Burke.
In conjunction with the Summer Sailstice, the Club is sponsoring an art poster contest among Nashua students of grades seven to twelve. Eighteen posters featuring laser boat drawings are on display now at the Stillwater Cafe (near Winter Harbor) for two weeks. The public is invited to cast their vote for that special poster, and the winning art will represent the publicity for the 2015 Regatta in August.
On Saturday, June 20, members of the Fort Peck Sailing Club will host a fun afternoon of free sailing from 1 to 4 p.m. Different sizes of boats will be available, including laser boat and colorful catamarans. Rides will start from the Fort Peck Marina.
"We want people to meet each other and learn about sailing. Fort Peck has wind and water-the combination lends itself to great sailing adventures," said Burke.
