Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
"We have a great town here, and you are a part of the story," Superintendent Bob Connors said at the 2015 graduation on Sunday, May 24.
Parents, family and friends gathered to watch the class walk the aisle, and step into the next chapter in their lives.
School Board Trustee Alison Molvig gave honors to teacher Hope Jones during the ceremony. Jones has served as a teacher for 25 years as a special education, social studies, reading, math and alternative school teacher. Molvig read a letter from a former student who said that her classroom allowed students to learn, that she provided guidance, she was a great resource and respected students' opinions. He said that she helped students find themselves, as well as learn.
The class speaker Samuel Schultz spoke to his classmates and the crowd about how his class had probably been a challenge to teachers. He also noted that there were 474 tardies for a class of 64 students, which got a few laughs from the crowd. He noted that the small community helped give them virtues that they wouldn't have gotten elsewhere.
The commencement speaker was Brent Braden, a 1996 Glasgow High School graduate. He now works for Nike. After his time at GHS he went to the University of Arizona and then followed to the University of Oregon for his MBA. He now resides in Portland.
Braden told the students about how he met Michael Jordan, but he said the most memorable story told was from a business mentor and colleague. His colleague told him about how he ended up meeting Martin Luther King, Jr. and stood by his side during his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. It all happened because he accepted an offer to work security during the day, but after the speech he walked up the King and asked for the copy of the speech. That speech was folded in half and handed over to him, because he asked.
The message that Braden wanted the class to take from the story was to take opportunities and give in to the unknown. He added that without taking a chance, you might never know what doors might open. His other messages were directed at being thankful for family and to stay in touch with friends, as friends can also present opportunities and family will be there no matter what goes on in life.
The ceremony closed up with a video presentation of the students. The top ten students were Makkell Baillargeon, Josephine Braaten, Amy Breigenzer, Kaleb Cole, Edwin Daggett, Chase Fossum, Kerry Hoffman, Keil Krumwiede, Jacob Page, Tamrah Pewitt, Samuel Schultz, Hailey Stone, MaKenzie Wesen and Amanda Wolff.
