Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
This column is in response to Lih-An Yang's op-ed piece in last week's Glasgow Courier.
My point is this: Had Ms. Yang researched some of my columns on immigration reform she would have seen I fully favor immediate citizenship for those folks who were brought into the US illegally, or in their mothers' womb. I favor immediate citizenship for those who have gone through elementary, high school and college here and have been productive, law-abiding tax-paying citizens. The same for those who have been in the military fighting for the “Stars and Stripes” and those in law enforcement.
Ms. Yang would have read how I rail at those in this country illegally, drawing “entitlements” they are not entitled to draw. Those who use the United States as a dumping ground for their drugs, a place to foster prostitution, sexual predation and other crimes.
As to Ms Yang's statement that “Mr Vaupel might never get the insecure feeling that comes with NOT being a member of the dominant majority.” To that statement I say to Ms Yang have you never heard the words “reverse discrimination?”
A couple cases in point. A high schooler in California ran a Mexican flag up the school flag pole. Another kid took it down. Who got in trouble? You might think it was the kid who ran up the flag. You'd be wrong. And here's the classic. Some high school kids in (where else?) California wore American flags printed on tee shirts to school on cinco de mayo day. They were told to go home and change their shirts.
Cinco de Mayo Day was actually created by the tequila and Mexican beer producers to promote the drinking of their products. (Look it up!!)
And in answer to your query, Ms Yang, as to why I don't call out individual immigrants and challenge them to be better citizens I say now who is being the fool? Individually? Really? I should individually “call out” the eight or so million immigrants who have entered the US illegally and tell them they better shape up or ship out?
Each year in the US 3.5 million people die while 2.5 are being born. See, the birth rate has been dropping lower and lower in the United States. This allows the US Immigration Service to invite one million immigrants to become American citizens. (2,739 per day.) By their own account the US gov't estimates that of the million, 20% will be those looking for the free entitlements they are not entitled to receive. Food stamps, housing, utilities, clothing schooling and a plethora other hand-outs.
Ms Yang....those are the people with whom I find fault. But if you feel pangs of paranoia or guilt over being here in the United States I think that's your problem, not mine.
In closing I would suggest you and others of like thinking take a good look at the word “incrementally.”
Could this be you writing about immigration in 40 or 50 years?
I am not a fool, as Ms. Yang wrote. Sometime I act foolishly or write foolishly. My motto is “Growing old is mandatory....growing up is an option. I choose the latter.
That's it for now folks. Thanks for listening.
