Reds Pick Up First Win, Moms Treated To Pitching Dual

It's the season of sunflower seeds, hot dogs, and sunscreen. The Glasgow Reds traveled to Havre on Sunday, May 10 to open their season with some Mother's Day baseball.

After a small ceremony to celebrate the mothers in attendance, the double header showcased the younger players from both sides in the first game. Reds B Kasey Seyfert started on the mound, followed by Brayden Jackson and the closer, Hunter Losleben. There was good rotation of players, with the whole roster getting some game time. The boys were down 0-2 early in the game, and although they rallied back with two runs in the sixth inning, they eventually fell to the Northstars with a final score of 4-2.

The A team took the stage shortly after 4 pm. Senior Sam Schultz started the first two innings. Ryan Padden, Keil Krumwiede, Jason Thibault, and Cutter Kolstad, also seniors, followed with their outings on the mound.

With strong pitching from both teams and rusty swings on the bats, the Reds managed to string two hits together, just enough to come away with a 1-0 win.

Glasgow's lone run came at the top of the fourth inning. Thibault reached first on a base hit, stole to second, and scored the much needed run by Sam Schultz's RBI single.

The five pitchers combined threw a one-hitter game, walked one while striking out six. Padden got the non-conference win, and Thibault the save.

The Havre Northstars only saw three baserunners in the entire game. Their ace Tyrell Pierce threw a complete game, yielding one run on five hits. He struck out five.

"I didn't do much in the game," joked Head Coach Jack Sprague. "I only had one runner coming by me the whole time."

Reds Schultz and Parker Kulczyk each had two hits. Thibault added one hit and drew one walk. Dylan Guttenberg also drew a walk. "Our baserunning was pretty good, and fielding was fine from what little they had to do. Our hitting was just off, though," said coach Sprague. "The guys' timing was off, they were swinging late. I kind of expected that for the first game."

The Reds will have two-and-a half weeks to fine-tune their strokes on the bats. They travel to Billings to take on the Cardinals on May 30 for a conference double header at 3 and 5 pm.
