Softball Team Headed To Conference 4-1

The Glasgow softball team put two more Ws under its belt last week and is entering the Glasgow Softball Slam this weekend as the No. 2 team to beat, just one game back behind No. 1 Conrad.

The first win came from defeating Glendive on the Red Devils' diamond, 9-6, on Tuesday, April 28. Jumping up to a 4-0 lead in the second innings, the Scottie girls maintained a 3-run lead for the rest of the game to earn this non-conference win. The Scotties are 2-0 against class A Glendive this season.

Of notable performance, according to Scottie Head Coach Mark Falcon, is first baseman Autumn Hopkins. Batting seventh in the lineup, Hopkins played "her best game so far" as she went 3-4 at the plate with a triple and a RBI.

Winning pitcher Tyra Johnson pitched a complete game allowing 10 hits, 4 earned runs, 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. Batting cleanup, she also went 2-4 with two RBI including a single home run.

Against Red Devils' pitcher Haylee Storlie, the Scottie players batted a 0.371 average, walked once and struck out 3 times. Khloe Krumwiede was 0-5, Tiana Johnson 2-4, Abbi Kolstad 1-4, Tyra Johnson 2-4, Sadie Sukut 1-4, Lexi Nixdorf 1-2, Autumn Hopkins 3-4, Kiauna Barstad 1-4, and Teagan Fossum 2-4.

Traveling to Havre on Saturday, May 2, the Scotties raised their conference standing to 4-1 as they cruised to a win over the seventh-place Cut Bank Lady Wolves in six innings, 13-3. Abbi Kolstad and Sadie Sukut, batting second and cleanup, both "had a tremendous game" according to Falcon, each batting 2-3 at the plate with a home run. Nashua freshman Ziggy Chamberlain also went 2-3 with a double and a triple, contributing one RBI.

Tyra Johnson again earned the win. She struck out seven, walked six, and gave up five hits in six innings. Cut Bank pitcher Emma Pyette picked up the loss.

The JV team had a good day. They battled Conrad JV in a tight game, coming out on top 9-8. Pitcher Teagan Fossum got the win.

Now at 11-2 overall, with solid pitching and bats going strong, the team will need to tighten up on fielding. Ten errors have been committed in the last three games.

CONFERENCE STANDING

As of May 2, 2015, around the 4B conference the standing looks like this:

Conrad 7-0

Glasgow 4-1

Great Falls Central 4-2

Stillwater 4-2

Huntley Project 4-3

Shepherd 4-3

Cut Bank 2-5

Shelby 1-6

Colstrip 0-8

Coming this weekend will be a big test whether Glasgow could stay at the second place standing. Hosting the Glasgow Softball Slam Tournament, the Scotties will have three conference games-Great Falls Central, Shepherd, Shelby-- and will need to win all three in order to stay close with Conrad. All games will be played at the Sullivan Park Complex, starting at 1 pm on Friday, May 8 as Glasgow takes on Great Falls Central.

There will be no more softball games played at the Cal Ripken Jeff Jurgens Field the remainder of this season. The Scottie girls hosted a non-conference game with Sidney Lady Eagles on Tuesday, May 5 on the Cal Ripken field at press time. The Courier will have the full results in the next issue.

After this busy weekend, the Scotties shall zoom in on the Divisionals to be held in Conrad, May 15-16.
