Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
The Scottie softball team suffered their first conference loss to what many consider the top team in the division, the Conrad Cowgirls. The Cowgirls shut down the Scotties, 2-0, on April 25 at the Columbus Invitational Tournament.
But not before the Scotties picked up three conference wins in Columbus, beating Huntley Project Lady Red Devils 10-4, Colstrip 16-8, and narrowly edging the tough Stillwater, 5-4.
That brings the Scotties to a 3-1 in conference record, 9-2 overall.
Scottie Tyra Johnson was the winning pitcher vs. Huntley Project and Stillwater. In her dominant fashion, she pitched complete games in both wins. Against Huntley, Johnson allowed seven hits, walked one, and struck out seven. Against Stillwater, she allowed six hits, walked two, and had five Ks.
“Tyra is pitching really well for us,” said Scottie Head Coach Mark Falcon. “She is a little bruised up from getting hit on the shin by a line drive and hit by a pitch on the ankle over the weekend. But her arm is doing great. Teagan is also pitching well, and getting stronger.”
Sophomore Teagan Fossum picked up the win over Colstrip. She pitched six innings, giving up eight hits and seven walks, and struck out four. Johnson earned the save.
The Conrad softball team is a co-op with Choteau. Its ace pitcher, sophomore Tristin Achenbach, is a class B All-Stater. Dealing the Scotties’ first conference loss and a shutout, Achenbach went all seven innings on the mound, giving up only one hit (Abbi Kolstad, 1B) and walked one (Lexi Nixdorf) while striking out 14.
“This is the first time our team has faced a pitcher like that, and this is something we will have to work on,” said coach Falcon. “The girls played really well, though. We made some fielding errors that allowed Conrad to score on us, otherwise it’d still be a 0-0 game.”
Scottie Tyra Johnson gave up only three hits, and walked three while striking out four.
