Scottie Softball Heads To Williston At 2-0

Victories Over Class A Havre, Dawson County Encouraging For Coach Falcon’s Young Team

The young 2-0 Scotties softball team has season opening wins over Class A Havre and Dawson County under its belt going into the game Thursday at Williston.

Skipper Mark Falcon's visiting squad led throughout in its 6-4 victory over the Blue Ponies on March 24, then played catchup to beat the Red Devils, 8-7, in its home opener March 26.

“The team is playing good,” Falcon told The Courier. “It's really early in the season. We're just trying to see where everyone goes. We're trying to improve every day and grow as a team.”

The GHS outfield – freshman right fielder Ziggy Chamberlain, senior center field Sadie Sukut and sophomore left fielder Teagan Fossum – was key in the victory at Havre. Falcon said each made a “great catch” and contributed at the plate and on the base paths.

Sukut went 1-for-2 with a home run, two RBI and two runs.Chamberlain went 1-for-2 with a single, an RBI and two runs. Fossum went 1-for-2 with a double and a run. Sophomore Khloe Krumwiede collected Glasgow's other hit, a double, and knocked in a run in three at-bats.

Winning Pitcher Tyra Johnson went all seven innings, giving up four earned runs while striking out seven and walking four.

Havre reliever Paige Henderson took the loss, giving up three earned runs in the seventh, her only inning on the mound. She also led the Blue Ponies with two hits – a single and triple – in three plate appearances. Havre starter Dani Wagner gave up three runs in six innings.

Against Dawson County, the Scotties rallied from a 7-3 deficit with five unanswered runs in the last three innings to get the W.

“We capitalized on their mistakes, their errors,” Falcon said. “I have to give the girls credit for not giving up. I thought they could come back.”

Johnson again picked up the victory for GHS, going the distance. She yielded six earned runs, struck out two and walked two in seven innings. Falcon said she “pitched well.”

Johnson also went 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles, an RBI and a run. Sophomore Lexi Nixdorf went 1-for-3 with a double, knocked in three runs and scored the game winner. Krumwiede was 2-for-4 with triple, two RBI and a run.

Glasgow's other hits came from sophomore Tiana Johnson, a double, senior Autumn Hopkins and Sukut. Hopkins provided the other RBI.

Hopkins and Sukut are the team's only seniors.

Haylie Storlie took the loss for the Devils. The Scotties pounded 10 hits and scored seven earned runs against her over 6.33 innings. Storlie struck out six and walked two.

Falcon said the Scotties need to improve at working the count and in the field. They've given up seven errors.

“They're working hard,” he said. “We need to focus, keep improving. We're a young team. We'll come on.”

After the Williston game, Glasgow gets a week off before hosting Lewistown on April 9.
