Hughes, Phillips, Braaten Qualify For State; Hinsdale, Nashua, Saco Athletes Get Wins
Three Scotties are more than on track to qualify for the Class B state tournament. They're there.
The homegrown qualifiers at Glasgow's own invite Saturday were Josie Braaten in the 3,200 meter run, Dana Hughes in shot put and discus, and Benji Phillips in javelin. The three helped GHS show well in the season opener, with the girls placing first as a team and the boys second.
Local Class C schools also enjoyed success at Scottie Field. Athletes from three of those schools – Hinsdale, Nashua and Saco – won six total firsts. Results for all local athletes who didn't disqualify, including those from Frazer and Lustre Christian, are at the bottom of this story.
The meet wasn't the most ordinary one for Tim Phillips to open his career with as Scottie head coach. A number of Scotties were absent due to other commitments and for lacking required practice time, plus the weather changed dramatically from sunny and pleasant in the morning to wet and windy in the afternoon.
But Phillips said the Scotties who did compete came through. Some started the season with personal bests, while Benji Phillips, Hughes and Braaten put on a show.
"I'm happy they made it to State on their first shot," coach Phillips said.
Benji Phillips, a sophomore, killed it in the javelin.
His best throw of 194 feet, 7 inches, qualified him for State with more than 27 feet to spare, outdistanced Malta runner-up Jase Bishop by 49 feet, 10 inches, and soared past Kori Meiers' GHS school record of 185 feet, 11 inches from 2012. It also became Phillips' PB by 25 feet, 9 inches.
"I thought Benji would throw well, but not that," Tim Phillips said.
Then there's Hughes. The senior's work in the weight room all winter has started paying off quickly.
She easily qualified for State with throws of 35 feet, 10.5 inches, in the shot put and 112 feet, 5 inches, in the discus. She also placed first in javelin with 112 feet, 5 inches, but needs a little more than 3 additional feet to qualify for State in that competition. All three winning throws were PBs.
Another senior, Braaten, made State as she did in XC last fall. Her winning run of 12:17.36 in the 3,200 meters slipped 3 seconds under the qualifying standard.
Among the team's other PBs:
• Amy Breigenzer – 15 feet, 1.75 inches in the long jump (plus 2.25 inches).
• Trent Herbert – 18 feet, 7.25 inches in the long jump (plus 5.25 inches).
• Chase Hughes – 9 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault (plus 6 inches).
• Jordan Kulczyk – 20.58 in the100 meter hurdles (minus 2 seconds).
• Benji Phillips 19 – feet, 6 inches in the long jump (plus 1 foot, 5.25 inches).
• Trevor Toevs – 116 feet, 11 inches in the javelin (plus 4 feet, 3 inches).
• Keirsten Wethern – 72 feet, 7 inches in the discuss (plus 6 feet, 1 inch).
The Scotties next compete Thursday, April 2, at the Wibaux Invitational in Glendive and have removed the Cal Wearley Invite from their schedule on April 8. After that, it's the Baker Invite on April 11.
Class C Standouts
The Hinsdale Raiders led Courierland Class C schools with three firsts: senior Courtney Capdeville at 8 feet in the pole vault, senior Dallas Capdeville at 6 feet in the high jump, and senior Lukus Johnson at 40 feet, 10 inches in the shot put.
The Nashua Porcupines followed with two firsts: junior Lane Nickels at 2:10.74 in the 800 meter run and 5:10.48 in the 1,600 meter run.
Also taking a first was Saco sophomore Alana Ostrom at 5 feet in the high jump.
