Please Help With The Tires

Old tires and landfills are a poor combination. Tires that are mixed into the landfill site act just like balloons coming up through the debris, so, the landfill attempts to keep them separate. Because of the space issues in the landfill, grinding tires or baling them is preferred to burying them.

Currently the Valley County Landfill is charging dealers to dispose of their old tires. The landfill board attempts to recover these costs without being so expensive that people take their tires home and then throw them in the borrow pit (causing another problem). That is also why there is no charge for white goods, so that we don't have to clean them up, which happens in other counties. If costs for disposal of tires is more than what it receives, then the board will have to raise the assessment.

So please do not throw tires in the container (or the ditch). Cooperation from the public will be much appreciated and will help keep costs down. The landfill crew will also be grateful for not having to contend with those balloons. Thank you for your help.

Valley County Commissioner Dave Reinhardt sits on the county landfill board.
