Mountain Bikers Falls On Lake Ice, Rescued

Dispatch received a call on Sunday for a rather unusual reason. The local caller, Tim Ogrinc, alerted dispatch that he had fallen off his mountain bike and possibly broken his hip. What made this unusual is he was actually out on the lake with a mountain bike that had studded snow tires.

The call came in close to 1:40 p.m. He told dispatch that he left Duck Creek and went out for a ride and on his return he fell on the ice. With his dog by his side, he told dispatch that a snowmobile or four wheeler with a sled might be able to retrieve him. Dispatch was able to match his location by his cell phone, so the search didn't last long.

A deputy was alerted, along with a medic. The medic said that they possibly would need search and rescue with an airboat to retrieve the man. An ambulance waited at the Duck Creek boat ramp. Valley County Sheriff Glen Meier said that he also responded. The dispatch report shows that Meier had dispatch alert BLM in the area and that the air boat was responding.

BLM reported spotting him and making contact by 2:38 p.m. Meier said he wasn't crossing the lake; he was just crossing a small portion of ice along Duck Creek Bay. The ice boat was able to retrieve him and he was brought to FMDH.
