Roness? He Signs While At MetraPark To Play Football At Montana Western
Kasey Seyfert placed third at 120 and Cody King sixth at 138. And as a unit, the six Scotties at the state B/C wrestling tournament in Billings last weekend made it to the Sweet 16 top teams.
"We did OK," coach Jory Casterline told The Courier. "I knew with our (disappointing) Divisional that we had that we wouldn't do as good as we hoped at State."
Seyfert, a year after placing sixth at 113 at State, placed third this time around at 120. He decisioned Jonathan Schmidt of Eureka, 10-6, in the third place match and went 4-1 over the weekend at MetraPark.
Seyfert's Top 3 showing followed several weeks in which we was dealing with an illness and wrestled a limited schedule in hopes of strengthening for State.
"Kasey showed up and brought it," Caserline said. "What we did paid off for him, definitely. There were no signs of (his illness) on the mat."
King went 2-3 at State, getting through the quarterfinals 2-0 before losing three matches. His 9-2 loss to eventual runner-up JJ Werdal of Choteau proved to be his undoing.
"Cody had a good tournament up until the semis with Werdal," Casterline said. "It's tough to bounce back mentally from that. We just have to be able to come back from that and look for that third place finish."
Not placing for the Scotties were Mick Reyling (2-2) at 126, Jake Hentges (1-2) at 145, Tony Kaiser (0-2) at 160 and Tanner Roness (2-2) at 182.
But Roness did come up big at MetraPark. He signed a Frontier Conference letter of intent to play football for the Montana Western Bulldogs, per the team's Facebook page.
Roness, 5-11 and 185 pounds, was a bruising All-State force at fullback and linebacker on last season's powerhouse Scottie football team. He made it to State in only his second year of wrestling. Casterline commended him for having a "good tournament" and wrestling to his ability.
He's undecided on his major at Western.
Casterline thanked Scottie Nation for its support at State and driving over winter roads to meets during his first year at coach.
"We can't do it without those guys," he said. "We had quite a few fans in Billings. They need to be complimented. Words of encouragement can go a long way for these kids."
