Two State Tournaments Friday Through Sunday At Valley Event Center
The state comes to Glasgow this weekend.
The U19 and U14 Lady Ice Dawgs teams host the Montana Amateur Hockey Association State Hockey Tournament from Friday to Sunday at Valley Event Center.
"I think it's a great draw for people to acknowledge hockey in this area," U19 coach Ken Schmidt told The Courier. "The girls have been playing great, and it brings people to town."
The U19 girls figure to be in the hunt for the title, but they'll need to be at their best.
The team, including several members from last year's U14 state champs, is 12-8 after a dominant 4-0 road trip in North Dakota a couple of weeks ago and a home split last weekend with Williston and Crosby.
The latest Dakota excursion include a victory over Bottineau, the fourth ranked team in the North Dakota Amateur Hockey Association.
And in January, the Lady Ice Dawgs shut out the undefeated and top ranked Fargo Freeze in overtime, 1-0, with goalie Autumn Gault playing out of her mind and blocking 53 shots. Alex Simensen scored.
"You know, I think there will be some tough games for us this weekend," coach Schmidt said. "But we've beaten some good teams and been competitive in every game this year. When you can compete from Glasgow, Mont., (with strong hockey programs elsewhere), that's pretty cool."
Four high school seniors on the 17-player roster are winding down their Ice Dawg careers: MaKenzie Wesen, Carly Wesely, Sadie Sukut and Tamrah Pewitt. After this weekend, their last hurrah comes March 6-9 at the North Dakota state championship tourney in Bismark.
The girls open play this Friday at 11 a.m. against Whitefish and 8:30 p.m. against Bozeman.
Tournament games are free to attend. Schmidt invites folks to check it out.
As for this year's young edition of the U14 girls, it's all about having fun and gaining experience. They're still looking for their first win of the season.
Nemont.tv will webcast the Glasgow vs. Missoula U19 game at 6 p.m. Saturday and the championship games at 10 a.m. and noon Sunday.
Meanwhile, the promising Ice Dawg Squirts and their 15-1 record head to Missoula for their state tournament Friday to Sunday.
