District Competition About To Heat Up

Scottie Boys Ranked No. 4 In State; Leinie Hughes Breaks Out For Girls

The question right about now for the Glasgow Scotties basketball teams is if they are 2B or not 2B.

More answers start coming this weekend.

The first of two four-game stretches against District 2B competition this season begins Friday for the boys, ranked No. 4 by MaxPreps in Montana Class B, and a girls team getting a fresh start in conference play.

The district games will unfold over eight days – Friday, Jan. 9, to Saturday, Jan. 17. First up: this Friday at Harlem and Saturday against visiting Plentywood.

Boys coach Norm Braaten keeps rising the bar for his 6-0 squad, which maintains the highest of expectations. G-Town is is coming off a 56-46 road win last Friday at Sidney – which MaxPreps puts at No. 6 in Class A.

"We look forward to playing better this week," Braaten told The Courier. "I'm hoping for four solid days of practice this week."

Braaten said the Scotties overcame illnesses that slowed several players over the holiday break to perform well against the Eagles, "a solid Class A team with good athletes that match up well with us." He said Glasgow showed some "decent defense that's starting to come along" and looked good at the line with 17 fourth quarter free throws thanks to Sidney fouls.

That said, the Glasgow coach wants his players to "work hard" on improving their timing and screen play on offense and defense.

At Sidney, the Scotties opened up leads of 14-8 after a quarter and 28-18 at the half – a 10-point spread that they ended up preserving. Leading them in scoring were the senior trio of Keil Krumwiede with 19 points, Jason Thibault with 17 and Jake Page with 11. Also scoring were teammates Chase Fossum with 6, Jake Kolstad with 2 and Gage Legare with 1.

Leading the Eagles, 3-2 on the season, were Case Strasheim with 12, Tristan Rohner with 9 and Brett Norby with 8.

Glasgow is 1-0 in 2B – the win coming Dec. 19 over visiting Malta – as it travels to face a Harlem team that's 0-1 in the district and 1-3 overall. A key for the Scotties is containing 6-6 wing player Tristan Gone, a force who drives well and shoots 3s.

"We gotta stop him," Braaten said.

On Saturday, Braaten hopes to play some younger players and "clean up some things" performance wise against a young, inexperienced Plentywood team (0-1, 1-4).

The following weekend brings road games Jan. 16 at Poplar and Jan. 17 at Wolf Point. The Wolves (2-0, 3-1) pose a real challenge. MaxPreps slots them at No. 9 statewide.

The young Glasgow girls team, meanwhile, is 1-5 as it approaches the meat of the 2B schedule.

The Lady Eagles beat the Scotties, 73-47, last week, but 6-0 sophomore Leinie Hughes showed why coach Jon Kolstad believes she can become a well-rounded, solid post player.

Hughes led Scottie scorers with 17 points. Also scoring were Abbi Kolstad with 12, Khloe Krumwiede with 7, Amanda Wolff with 5, Tyra Johnson with 4 and Lexi Nixdorf with 2.

Leading Sidney, an experienced Class A contender, were All-State selections Kortney Mayer with 17 and Hailey Steinbeisser with 13.
