Veteran Malta Too Much For Young GHS

The M-ettes of Malta are M-pressive this season. This the Scotties know.

Malta's veteran basketball team visited GHS last week and showed in a 58-15 victory why it's a contender for the state Class B title a year after finishing second.

“You know, Malta is tough,” Scotties coach Jon Kolstad told The Courier. “They've got good shooters. They're an experienced, tough team. I think they're one of the top four teams in Class B in the state. They were good competition for our girls to play.”

Kolsad said the Scotties played OK, handling the press and traps well, but passed up too many shots. Accounting for Glasgow's scoring were junior Abbi Kolstad with 11 points and sophomore Leinie Hughes with 4.

“We need to shoot and take open shots more, attack the basket more,” coach Kolstad said.

Leading the M-ettes were Markelle Lett and Darby Shye with 11 points each and Sophia Stiles and Marley Manoukian with 9 apiece.

The Scotties, 1-4 overall, have lost more than a game. Two players went down with injuries this past week.

Delaney Holzworth, a junior, is out after breaking the little finger on her shooting hand in a C game at Opheim. Ashtyn Myrick didn't play against Malta with back pains, and it's unclear when she might return.

Coach Kolstad the team will now look to increase its roster, bringing up players to the varsity or recruiting new ones.
