Volleyball Scotties Please Coach In Defeat

Dailey: They Showed 'Hustle And Heart' At Divisionals

No. 4 tries harder. The Glasgow Scotties, the fourth and final team coming out of 2B in last week's Class B Northern Divisional Tournament, proved to be most competitive against eventual champion Choteau and then old rival Plentywood.

The Scotties lost to both and were done, but they impressed their coach, Lori Dailey, in how they did it – with “heart and hustle.” The Scotties went down fighting.

“We were proud of our determination in the Choteau match, not bowing to a very talented, very tall, very well-coached team that ended up winning Divisionals and is headed to State this weekend,” Dailey told The Courier. “We showed more heart and hustle and teamwork in the Plentywood match than we had almost all season”

On Monday came word that three Scottie seniors were honored for jobs well done this rebuilding year for the V-girls. Sadie Sukut was named All-State and First Team All-Conference. Amy Breigenzer and Dana Hughes were named Second Team All-Conference.

Dailey called Sukut “a hard worker who really gets the job done on the court. She accepts the challenges dished out by other teams and often comes out on top.”

Over the season, Sukut led the Scotties in all stat categories except assists.

“Even though our record is about .500, this 2014 group of girls – who worked so hard for me every day at practice and gave everything they had when we played – are all winners,” Dailey said. “It has been my privilege to work with these dedicated athletes and to showcase them in front of the awesome fans of Glasgow, Montana. Be proud, Scotties!”

Dailey said “a lot of good came out” of the Divisionals. The Scotties lost 8-25, 17-25 and 18-25 on Thursday to the host Choteau Lady Bulldogs, who proceeded to claim the Northern B title and advance with runner-up Shelby to State later this week at Bozeman.

Dailey's said her players' performance was “definitely nothing to hang their heads about, especially after having received condolences about opening with Choteau from every coach at the Divisional Tournament.”

Leading Glasgow were Sukut with 10 of 19 team kills, Delaney Holzworth with 1 of 2 blocks, Hughes with 6 of 24 digs, Teagan Fossum with 13 of 15 assists, and Hughes with both team aces.

Leading Choteau were Celie Salmond with 10 of 27 kills, Haley Henderson with 7 of 25 digs, Hallie Stringfellow with 14 of 26 assists, Salmond with 6 of 10 aces, and Hannah Bowers and Hannah King, each with 7 of the team's 30 blocks.

Next up for Glasgow was Plentywood, one of the District 2B favorites that GHS had yet to beat this season.

Dailey said her Scotties “came out on fire and surprised the Wildcats with their tenacity and energy,” winning 25-20 in the first game. Plentywood won the next two games, 25-17 and 25-15, before a fierce fourth game with numerous lead changes that the Lady Wildcats won, 25-21.

“Naturally, it was heartbreaking,” Dailey said. “Seasons end so abruptly, and we were stunned to find ourselves without another match to prepare for.”

Leading Glasgow were Holzworth with 8 of its 28 kills, Sukut with 9 of 19 blocks, Sukut with 9 of 46 digs, Fossum with 23 of 26 assists, and Sukut with 4 of 15 aces.

Leading Plentywood were Lindsey Wangerin with 12 of 46 kills, Paige Harris with 5 blocks, Dakota Simonson with 16 of 70 digs, and Victoria Obergfell with 16 of 30 assists and 6 of 16 aces.
