Glasgow Volleyball Stays On Growth Path

Plentywood In Town For Senior Night Today

Last Thursday, the Scottie volleyball teams came home with solid wins at all three levels vs. the Wolf Point Wolves. In fact, all three Glasgow teams won in three games straight.

More success came Saturday at Poplar.

Tuesday proved to be more challenging as the varsity fell in four games at Malta, but there's an opportunity to bounce back tonight – Senior Night – against visiting Plentywood.

Proud GHS coach Lori Dailey told The Courier that the statistics against Wolf Point show that many Scotties had good games, but what they don't capture are the personal efforts that go unrecognized by most people in the stands. These diving saves and quick-reflex plays helped beat a talented Wolf Point team, one that the Scotties frequently struggle against. They kept the ball alive on some incredibly long volleys – a tribute to both teams for never giving up on a play.

"Wolf Point is scrappier than ever before," Dailey said. "Their defense was amazing and I think we got lucky that their offense wasn't as effective as usual. But we did play really well together and were successful because of a full-team effort. I was so proud of my team today."

The varisty topped Wolf Point 25-22, 25-22 and 26-16. It was another time to shine this season for senior Sadie Sakut, who led the Scotties with 12 kills, 4 blocks and 4 aces. Dana Hughes led with 7 digs and Teagan Fossum with 24 assists.

Next up were the Poplar Indians on Saturday evening. There was no C Squad game, so many of those players journeyed to Poplar and saw time in the JV match, which they won in four games despite two late injuries.

The varsity team won in three: 25-11, 25-7, 25-14. An injury to Katie Brandt in the previous match dropped the Scottie roster back down to 10 players, but again they played well together, even in a variety of lineups.

"We really challenged some of the players by putting them into unfamiliar positions and they performed nicely, without panicking at all," Dailey said. "I'm very pleased with how quickly they adapted. It's great to coach such driven players who trust us and are willing to do what it takes to win."

This is the Scotties' biggest stretch of conference competition.

At the Malta match, the Scotties fell short, 17-25, 25-23, 20-25, 13-25. The team was unable to generate much offense as a whole while Malta capitalized on their height and experience.

"We were simply outplayed this time, but we can't afford to dwell on that because we have another huge match tonight (Wednesday) against Plentywood," Dailey said. "Going back-to-back is unfortunate because that kind of scheduling eliminates any chance of correcting issues from the previous game. It is time to toughen up and move on."

Today's action features a 4 p.m. C Squad start time. The Plentywood match is also Senior Night for Amy Breigenzer, Sydney Hersom, Dana Hughes and Sadie Sukut.

"Put on your Scottie red and white," Dailey said, "and pack the house for the final home match of the 2014 season!"
