2014 Glasgow XC Charging Down To The Wire

Girls, Boys Teams Haul In Firsts & Seconds At Sidney Invitational

It's come down to this for hard-running Glasgow XC.

The inaugural Plentywood invite debuts on Saturday. The state Class B cross country meet closes the season a week later on Oct. 25.

The Scottie girls and boys continued their quest for Big Sky glory last weekend with a bunch of firsts and seconds in the invitational at Sidney Country Club.

For the boys, the Scotties placed second and so did sophomore Gabe Hallock in 17:41, extending his recent string of fastest individual times for GHS. Dawson County's Ashton Jones took first in 17:12.

As for the girls, some things don't get old. They again placed first as a team with Josie Braaten first in the field at 19:51 and Amanda Wolff second in 21 flat.

"Personally, I think the girls are coming together," senior Kerry Hoffman told The Courier on Monday.

Hoffman, fifth among Scotties girls and 15th overall in 24:00 at Sidney, is cautiously optimistic about her team's chances at State on the rolling, high-elevation course in Helena. Her outlook for the four-time defending champs: "Definitely podium, hoping for first."

Junior Ethan Jamba, sixth for the boys and 26th overall in 20:26 at Sidney, said his team is improving in part thanks to "speedster" Hallock. Jamba described Sidney as "one of my worst meets" but said he might have a pulled right leg muscle and will be seeing a doctor.

Jamba is among those hoping the boys can podium at State, but he says fast competition awaits from such schools as Manhattan, Red Lodge, Shelby and Colstrip.

Beyond that, Jamba is bullish on the XC boys' future – considering that it's a team of underclassmen in 2014 and promising reinforcements are expected to start arriving in 2015 through the junior high pipeline.

It's time to salute the Glasgow XC seniors – Braaten, Wolff and Hoffman – for a job superbly done. Senior Night for the Scottie XC and volleyball teams goes down this evening before the Glasgow-Plentyood volleyball varsity match at the gym.
