Supreme Court Candidate VanDyke Stops In Glasgow

Montana Supreme Court candidate Lawrence VanDyke stopped by Sam's Supper Club last week for a small meet and greet. Mike Lang, House District 33 candidate was also present.

Unlike several other candidates who have stopped through, VanDyke was without an entourage and brought a few signs for locals to put up if they were interested.

VanDyke was making several stops along the Hi-Line to meet constituents and explained that he isn't really focused on all the politics, he's more focused on the law and the interpretation of it. He explained that he grew up in Bozeman and eventually moved onto Harvard Law. He specialized in appellate, or appeals. Appeals attorneys focus on cases that go to Federal and Supreme Courts. Those cases are generally not arguing facts of the case, but argue agains interpretation of the law and towards rights.

While he worked in Washington, D.C., and in Texas, he wanted to make his way back home to Montana and worked as the Montana solicitor general. He told those who attended the meet and greet that he decided to run for candidacy in hopes to make a difference. He wants to focus on the intent of the law, not what he called a "results orientated" interpretation.

When asked about his experience outside of Montana, he said that he felt that the outside experience coming in could be towards his advantage and gives him some fresh perspectives in the court. He said he wanted to bring a more rigorous approach on focusing on the law.

VanDyke said that he wanted his voters to get the information on the candidates before making a vote and suggested that voters look at his website, vandykeforjustice.com.
