Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
After a midweek trip to Glendive, the Scottie volleyball teams came home Tuesday night with mixed reviews.
The C squad prevailed and won their match in three straight games, shocking the Red Devils with their tough serving and successful offense – and maintaining a spotless record.
The JV and varsity squads were not quite as lucky, falling in three and four games, respectively.
"Part of the challenge can definitely be attributed to illness and injury,” coach Lori Dailey told The Courier. “We have to use a lot of players in uncomfortable positions, but we are getting better about being flexible."
Dailey said the well-coached Glendive team “handed the Scotties their second non-conference loss, but not without a good fight from a very young team.”
Statistics for the Glendive match were not immediately available.
Next up for the Scotties is a trip to the Dickinson Invitational on Sept. 26 and 27.
In earlier action last week, Glasgow split with Malta and Poplar. Here's a recap.
GHS VS. MALTA
On Thursday, the M-ettes were treated to one of the finest crowds in GHS volleyball history. Even the Malta coaching staff was complimentary of the student section, calling it one of the noisiest in the conference.
Thursday's match versus Malta started off with a bang as two intense and driven teams took to the court.
Offensive power shots and nail-biting defense kept both teams on their toes, and it looked like the Scotties were in a position to win Game 1 until Malta reignited and came out on top 25-23.
Game 2 was not as close and Malta won that one 25-15 while the Scotties struggled against the very tall Malta front line. Game 3 was better, but the Scotties just couldn't regain momentum and ended up falling 21-25.
"Even though we lost, we put up a much better fight against Malta than at the Chinook Invitational,” Dailey said. “The M-ettes are a well-coached, experienced and very tall team. I look forward to playing them again in October. It's a good rivalry."
Glasgow's individual leaders were Sadie Sukut with five kills, five blocks and five digs; Jazmine Shaw with four aces and Laura Runningen with four assists. In all, GHS totaled 10 kills, 11 blocks, 10 aces, 22 digs and seven assists.
Leading Malta were Larimie Scheffelmear with four kills, four blocks and six digs; Darby Schye with tree aces and Markelle Lett with six assists. Malta totaled 18 kills, 11 blocks, eight aces, 26 digs and 11 assists.
Both sub-varsity teams for Glasgow were victorious that evening, with C Squad winning in five games and the JV girls defeating Malta in three games straight.
GHS VS. POPLAR
Next up for Glasgow was a scrappy Poplar team. Similar in size and youth, the matchup provided another raucous Scottie crowd with plenty of reason to cheer. Neither side quit, both showed temerity and poise. The difference came when Glasgow was able to clean up its passing and work the offense to their advantage.
"If there were a most-improved team award for the district, I would definitely give it to Poplar,” Dailey said. “For such a young team, they showed tremendous unity and determination."
Glasgow's individual leaders were Sukut and Dana Hughes with six kills each, Hughes with three blocks, Runningen and Sukut with three aces each, Hughes with 10 digs and Runningen with 11 assists. The Scotties totaled 23 kills, five blocks, 10 aces, 31 digs and 15 assists.
Poplar's individual leaders were Avery Azure with eight kills and nine digs, Jessica Pipe with four blocks and three aces, and Kylee Stump and Brittany Whiteman with 10 assists each. Poplar totaled 28 kills, eight blocks, eight aces, 18 digs and 22 assists.
Again the sub-varsity Scotties were victorious, requiring just three games each, advancing their records after Poplar to 3-0 JV and 4-0 C Squad. The varsity team checks in with a 2-1 conference record.
