The Rain On The Plains

St. Marie News

Aloha e’ Komo mai. (Welcome.)

August brought a lot of rain and with it some problems and delays. Flooding and being very wet has put the skids on many Saint Marie maintenance projects, according to the monthly newsletter. It was stated by Town Hall staff that it was so wet that siding, roofing and cement work has been delayed until it can dry out which explained why our cement work to be done was delayed too. Some basements had rain related problems and as one neighbor told me, “it was a down pour” in hers.

The “tree guy” finally was able to come out and cut down the large tree that had partially come down on a telephone line July 24, at 382 C Poplar Street. The tree guy, also had half a dozen other locations to take care of according to the newsletter and contracted carpenters finished another half dozen door and window jobs.

Our lawns have stayed green, so unusual for this time of year, due to all the rain.

On our way to Town Hall, via 5th Avenue, we noticed a fence had been erected on Marco property. Frank called Ms. Darcel Wesen to ask her about it, since this was new! Ms. Wesen who is the Site & Airfield Manager stated that she could not comment on too much but that the fence went up to protect their property.

Also, "No Trespassing" signs are now up on the way to Town Hall which according to one of our volunteer fireman, has been posted by DTM but does not have a contact number on the signs.

When Frank and I met with our Volunteer Fire Department Aug. 6, Fire Chief Rob Esais stated that the fire crew had taped areas in the “No Trespassing” zone due to very dangerous conditions in some of the buildings and open foundation areas. One young boy had been going through a building when his leg went through the flooring. Worried that he might get himself in trouble he left the area. But later on, let the adults know that it was dangerous. Our fire guys put danger tape around the area and a couple of other building areas.

Also on a note about our volunteer fire department, Frank and I want to thank them. They are using old fire trucks that need a lot of work on them, the crew got the other big truck carburetor in and at the time we had spoken with them in early August, they had had two trucks down, two running but later was told that they finished the carburetor work. They do need a communication’s repeater since at the present time, they are not able to receive all radio calls. In some areas, they have to use their cell phones due to the lack of communications.

The crew also stated at that time, that they had six active members and five applicants and would feel better at having six more. So, if you are interested Saint Marie residents, talk to our guys at the fire house to volunteer!

We are hoping that the weatherman is wrong and that we will have a milder weather to come instead of the frost warnings predicted. I have scurried to pick our tomatoes and other tender plants, gathered our old sheets to toss on the rest of the plants if need be.

Have a wonderful week!
