Nolan Scott Hughes

Nolan Scott Hughes, 64, died Sunday, March 30, 2014, at his home south of Glasgow.

He was born Nov. 25, 1949, in Miles City, son of Scott and Grace (Dokter) Hughes. His education included first and second grades taught by his mother at home, third grade at Lincoln School in Miles City, fourth through eighth grades at the Monte school south of Miles City, and then four years at Custer County High School in Miles City. He graduated in 1967, and entered Custer County Junior College that same fall.

He was raised on the family ranch 22 miles south of Miles City, and in June 1968, he joined the United States Air Force, taking his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. He spent a year in Korea, and was discharged from the service in 1972 at Biloxi, Miss. Upon returning to the family home in Miles City, he went to work for the Milwaukee Railroad. Around the same time, a cute little waitress at the Redrock Village caught his attention, and on May 26, 1973, he and Darlene Jill Brost of Brockway, Mont., were married. They made their home in Miles City.

After the Milwaukee Railroad shut down in Miles City, he moved his family to Glendive, where he went to work for the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1978. In the fall of 1980 he moved the family to Glasgow with his job, where they have resided for the past 33 plus years.

He had a zest for life, and he loved to take his sons and his nephews on the spur of the moment and drive for hours to get to a place where there might be buried coins or some valuable treasure. Actually, he really wasn't too concerned about the buried treasure, but he enjoyed the time spent with them. He especially loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and was quick to offer an encouraging word, a prayer, or a word of advice. One of his favorite pieces of advice was, "You can marry more money in five minutes than you can make in a lifetime."

He enjoyed hunting and fishing, playing poker, attending auctions and garage sales, and he enjoyed being with family. Since he became sick, he especially has enjoyed the times when friends stop by the family home to share a cup of coffee, a meal, a piece of pie, or whatever is at hand, and a good visit.

Nolan will be greatly missed by many.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Scott and Grace Hughes.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene; two sons, Leighton, of Glasgow, and Jeremiah and his wife, Angela, of Aberdeen, S.D.; one daughter, Ashley Berkram and her husband, Aaron, of Glasgow; two brothers, Curtis Hughes and his wife, Margi Lou, of Billings, and Sid Hughes and his wife, Twilla, of Minot, N.D.; two sisters, Sharon Kauffman and her husband, Loyal, of Glasgow, and Janice Inches and her husband, Larry, of Aberdeen, S.D.; one aunt, Sylvia Hughes, of Billings; nine grandchildren, Leinie, Gabriel, Stormie, Gideon, Micah, Kylee and Clair Hughes, and Addyson and Amiah Berkram; and 21 nieces and nephews, Denae, Bryce and Brandon Kauffman and his wife, Vanessa; Travis and his wife, Dara, Orrin and his wife, Chantel, Carson and his wife, Jayce, Carter, Zachariah, Joshua, Josiah, Abigail, Alisha, and Amelia Hughes, Jacquelyn Anderson and her husband, Eric, Lexi Hougard and her husband, Thomas, Russell, Ryan and his wife, Rochelle, and Steven and his wife, Summer, and Madison Inches, Rachel Flaningan and her husband, Joshua, and Laura Beckner and her husband, Zac.

A celebration of his life was held at the Glasgow Assembly of God Church on Saturday, April 5.
