Serving Proudly As The Voice Of Valley County Since 1913
On Saturday the Ice Dawg high school team traveled to Havre for a pair of games against the Ice Hawks. As is normal in Havre, the games were hard-fought, physical affairs that saw a parade of players from both benches make their way to the penalty box.
Unfortunately, Glasgow ended up on the wrong side of the score, being defeated 5-1 in the first game. The Dawgs' lone goal came on the power play from Ryan Padden with an assist being credited to Sam Schultz.
On the bright side, even though Glasgow committed 11 penalties, it held the Hawks to only one power play goal. Clearly the penalty kill unit was working just fine.
Harley Eliason made 38 saves in the loss.
Game 2 saw the Ice Dawgs come onto the ice to a chorus of boos from the home crowd. Clearly this reception motivated the Dawgs as they jumped out to an early lead, outscoring the Hawks 3 to 1 in the first period.
Padden, Connor Simensen and Braden Barstad were credited with the goals, with assists going to Barstad/Schultz, Padden/Wyatt Mattfeldt and Padden once again.
In the second period, both teams scored twice, allowing the Ice Dawgs to maintain their two-goal lead. Padden continued his productive ways with an assist on Barstad's goal as well as an unassisted goal with three seconds left to close out the period.
Havre scored early in the third to draw within one goal of the Dawgs. Glasgow was able to kill four penalties in the third to maintain the lead, including a late one from the goaltender Eliason when he took exception to the actions of a Havre player crashing the net.
Padden scored unassisted with 1:19 left to put the Ice Dawgs up by two. Havre pulled their goalie for the numerical advantage but were unable to capitalize.
The Ice Dawgs took the 6-4 win on rival ice – silencing the boo birds from Havre. Eliason made 35 saves in the win and Padden had a 6-point game with the hat trick and three assists.
Glasgow will face Havre once again on home ice Dec. 14 at noon and 6 p.m. at the Valley Event Center.
