Nov. 5 Election A Mixed Bag

The upcoming municipal elections are featuring contested seats, write-ins and shoo-ins.

Glasgow Mayor Dan Carney, who is seeking a third term, has competition from an 18-year veteran of the City Council, Becky Erickson.

Glasgow Wards 1 and 2 are both having three-way races for the City Council. Incumbent Neil Chouinard will not run again in Ward 1, but Nancy Schoenfelder, Stan Ozark and Shawn Andersyn are vying for the job. In Ward 2, incumbent Melanie Sorensen is facing challengers Doug Nistler and Curt Clampitt.

Dan Carr is the shoo-in for Ward 3, with no opposition to his re-election.

Mayor Pat Hallett wants to continue in office in Nashua, but must defeat former mayor Allan Bunk. The two incumbents in Nashua’s Ward 1 have filed for re-election, Linda Falkenstern for a four-year term and Smokey Stover for a two-year term.

There is a three-person race for two seats on the Fort Peck Town Council. Thomas Weber and Joe French filed for re-election and Jeffrey Robertson has joined in the fray.

Opheim has the distinction of having all three kinds of election situations. The contested seat is in Ward 2, where practically all the residents have filed. OK, that’s an exaggeration. There are three candidates: Virgil Nelson, Joan Erickson and Eric Forum. The write-in is Mughetto Holley, who hopes to be mayor. And Scott St. John is the shoo-in, being unopposed for re-election in Ward 1.

Directors of the North Valley County Water and Sewer District at St. Marie are also being elected. Six candidates have filed for three four-year terms. They are Owen Childers, Leith DeWeese, Hank Endler, Anthony Hebert, Cindi Laffin and Marilyn Widhalm.

Voting in the municipal elections will be by mail only. Ballots will be sent out to residents Friday and must be received at the Clerk and Recorder’s Office by 8 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 5.

Regular voter registration closed Oct. 7. Late voter registration opened Oct. 8. People must come in person to the office of the Clerk and Recorder in the courthouse to register. They may do this through Election Day.
