Commissioners Set County Levies For 2013-14

The Valley County Commissioners set all county levies in September. This year the total county-wide levies are 85.74 mills, slightly more than last year, which was 84.3 mills.

According to Commissioner Bruce Peterson, the increase is due to two things. The new county-wide taxable valuation came in at $25,891,793, which is $122,000 higher than last year. Also there was an increase in the three-year average of the Consumer Price Index, which counties may divide by two to increase the mills without going to the voters.

The value of one mill in the county is equal to $25,891.

The road and rural fire valuation, which excludes cities and towns, was $22,293,530. A rural mill is worth $22,293. Roads will get 37.31 mills, plus another 10 mills, the largest chunk of the budget.

Other levies are placed on individual towns and light, fire and cemetery districts. Glasgow pays a levy of 320 mills; Nashua pays 223.56; Opheim pays 126.28; Fort Peck is 86.48. The St. Marie Fire District is 308.22 mills. The Richland special improvement district gets 1,052 mills, while the Opheim Cemetery District gets 1.96.
