The Glasgow Junior High cross country team participated in the Poplar meet on Saturday, August 31. The boys finished first with 42 points, followed by Poplar (55), and Wolf Point (63). The girls only had three runners, and could not do anything against the other teams. Poplar won with 32 points.
“It wasn’t a real big meet, but I thought all the kids competed real well,” coach Tim Phillips said. “For the boys, Bryce LaGare had some calf issues, but still managed to finish in the top 10.”
The biggest contribution came from Merlin and Ellis McKean. The twin brothers finished second and third, respectively. Merlin ran in 10 minutes and four seconds, followed one second behind by his brother.
“Having Merlin and Ellis finish second and third was a great start,” commented Phillips.
The other runners were not far behind, the last one, Jordan Billingsley, placing 22nd, in 13 minutes and 38 seconds.
The three girls who competed in the meet did very well, according to Phillips. Unfortunately, with only three runners, it was hard to gather points.
“For the girls, we were missing a couple runners, but they all ran solid,” Phillips explained. “For Emily Kolstad to finish second in her first ever cross country race, I was very impressed. Katie Kaiser had a great last half mile and moved up a bit there, and Alaina Sallee had a bad side ache, but managed to push through it.
