Spring Sports Smarties

At Glasgow High School, student really does come before athlete in student-athlete.

Across three sports, GHS had 28 student-athletes qualify for academic all-state. To qualify, students must earn a varsity letter in a MHSA sanctioned sport, and earn a 3.5 or higher GPA in the final quarter of the school year. Glasgow has 18 student-athletes qualify with a 4.0 GPA, the highest GPA recognized by MHSA.

“I think it’s really a tribute to how hard they work in the classroom and what [the student-athletes] do to represent our school in and out of the classroom,” said Activities Director Willie Thibault. “It says something about their dedication.”

Track and field, the spring sport with the highest participation, had 18 such kids represent track on the academic all-state qualifying list.

Seniors Laurel Wageman and Austin Green headlined the list, followed by juniors Megan Dailey, Abbi Helland, Lachlan Vaira, Emma Fewer, Rachael Zeiger, Lane Herbert and Tyler Wesen, sophomores Josie Braaten, Amy Breigenzer, Chase Fossum, Kerry Hoffman and Amanda Wolff, and freshmen Ethan Etchart, Logan Gunderson, Zach Miller and Trevor Toavs.

Softball had eight girls qualify, starting with seniors Alex Page and Heather Hickok, juniors Sage Sukut, Amanda Kresal and Ellen Walstad, sophomore Hailey Stone and freshmen Karissa Liebelt and Andrea Hansen.

Finally, golf had one boy, sophomore Wyatt Holzworth, and one girl, sophomore Makkell Baillargeon, representing.

The girls’ track team finished the year with a third-place trophy at state, scoring 37 team points. The girls scored the top team spot at both divisionals and districts. The boys scored six points at state after placing third in divisionals and first at districts.

The softball team took first place in the regular season and won the Eastern B/C Divisional Tournament en route to a state appearance.

Baillargeon qualified to golf at the Class B State Meet to represent the Scotties.
