Short-Handed Glasgow Kiwanis Takes Third

Only 17 Glasgow Kiwanis swimmers made the trip to Roundup for a two-day meet over the weekend. Glasgow still came home with a third-place trophy.

Even after an impressive opening meet the weekend before, coaches Matt Dangleis and Alex Leuchars were thrilled with the progress in just one week.

“The biggest [difference] from this point in the season last year is DQs (disqualifications),” said Leuchars. “Even our older swimmers were DQing all the time, but this year, I think we only had two DQs the entire meet. That’s going to make us much more competitive this year.”

In the process, Glasgow earned four high-point swimmers. Trevor Johnson, Khloe Krumwiede, Dalton Sand and Katie Kaiser all scored the most points in their class.

Johnson came home with three golds, taking the top spot in the 100-meter Individual Medley (IM), 50 backstroke and 50 fly in the boys’ 9-10 division.

Krumwiede scored three first-place finishes in the girls’ 13-14 class. She was first in the 200 IM, the 50 free and the 100 free. In the boys’ 8 and under class, Sand finished in first in the 100 IM, 50 free and 25 fly.

Kaiser took first in the 50 free and the 50 back and was second in the 50 fly, competing in the girls’ 11-12 class.

Also taking firsts were Taylor Johnson, in the boys’ 11-12 200 IM and 50 fly, and four Kiwanis relay teams, the boys’ 11-12 200 free and 200 medley and the girls’ 13-14 200 free and 200 medley. Johnson also brought home a silver in the 100 free.

Klaire Krumwiede placed in the top three in two events, taking second in the girls’ 9-10 100 IM and third in the 50 free. Tony Kaiser was second in the boys’ 13-14 50 free and third in the 100 free.

Tim Wageman took silver in the boys’ 11-12 50 backstroke and bronze in the 50 free. In the same class, Saul Hansen was second in the 200 IM and third in the 50 breaststroke.

DJ Rasmusan was second in the 50 free and the 100 backstroke and third in the 100 free in the girls’ 13-14 100 free.

Rachael Zeiger rounded out the multi-placers in the top top three for Glasgow, scoring a silver in the 50 fly and a pair of bronzes in the 100 fly and 100 backstroke in the girls’ 15-19 class.

Cara Goeke took the final top-three spot, finishing in third in the girls’ 13-14 200 IM.

Also placing at the event were Terrin Vandall, Aleah Goeke, Natosha Sand and Jordan Kulczyk. Tori Pehlke also swam in the meet.

“I was very pleased how everyone kept their composure in technique,” said Dangleis, who mentioned coaches complimented the team several times.

Now Dangleis is hoping to see more of the same as the team competes in Malta on Saturday and Sunday.

“We’re going to be more in force, which is going to be nice,” said Dangleis, expecting more swimmers to compete in Malta. “I’m excited for getting everyone in events and seeing how we can do overall. This will be a good preview for what divisionals and state will look like because we will have full force.”
