Gerhard “Leonard” Tweten, 93, died of natural causes on Thursday, May 9, 2013, at the Valley View Nursing Home in Glasgow, Mont.
He was born July 21, 1920, on the family farm north of Nashua, Mont., the son of Jacob and Jensina Tweten. He was raised on the family homestead, attended a country school north of Nashua, and graduated from Nashua High School in 1939. He was in a CC Camp in Missoula before moving to Seattle where he worked with Boeing.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served on the U.S. Saratoga until 1945.
On Jan. 27, 1946, he married Selma “Sally” Vegge in Glasgow. They raised their family living on the farm north of Nashua.
They were active with the Lutheran Church north of Nashua. He was a member of the Farmers Union Elevator Board for 25 years, the Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital Board, Sons of Norway, VFW, Luke’s 100, Elks and the Valley County Fair Board. He retired from farming and ranching in 2007.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sally, in August of 2012; and his son, David Tweten in 1979.
Survivors include three sons, Gary Tweten and his wife, Barbara, of Tampa, Fla., James Tweten and his wife, Ella, of Nashua, and Paul Tweten and his wife, Tana, of Glasgow; daughters, Nancy Lund and her husband, Mikel, of Scobey, and Beverly Elgie and her husband, Bill, of Wolf Point; a daughter-in-law, Kay Tweten Opp (Ron) of Rock Creek; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 13, at 11 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Glasgow, followed by interment in the Highland Cemetery in Glasgow.
Bell Mortuary of Glasgow was in charge of arrangements.
