The Glasgow Scotties crushed Glendive 47-14 at Scottie field on Friday, Sept. 6, in the first game of the season. The Scotties played great football on both sides of the line throughout the entire game and earned an easy win. Coach Greg Liebelt was pleased with the result. “It was a great victory for us,” Liebelt said. “We had a decisive win and we were able to have a lot of success, both on the ground and in our passing game.” The team quickly took control of the game, scoring its first t...
Despite the high temperatures on Sunday, August 25, 24 teams came out to support a great cause and get their daily dose of iron during the 15th Annual FMDH Foundation Open Golf Tournament. Each of the 24 teams registered, had breakfast, and were all ready to tee off by the 9 a.m. shotgun start. Every hole featured a different game for men and women with the winner taking home wonderful prizes donated by local businesses. Games were designed so that both experienced and inexperienced golfers...
The Scotties girls and boys cross country teams finished in third and 14th place, respectively, at the Billings Invitational on Friday, Sept. 6. The girls earned an impressive third place with 112 points behind two AA teams, Billings West (70) and Billings Senior (74). A good result and a way to see how the team stands regarding bigger school teams. Coach Rod Karst was pleased with the result and the efforts put into it. The fastest Scottie was junior Josie Braaten in 19 minutes and one second. She finished in fifth place overall. Senior Rachel...
The Scotties volleyball team came home from the two-day Chinook Invitational with a third-place finish after winning the consolation finals over Simms, 2-0. Shelby took the trophy home after defeating Cut Bank, 25-23, 25-24. The Scotties had a hard time getting into the tournament, according to coach Lori Dailey. The team only won one game on Friday and the coach had to gather her players and have a motivational talk with them. “Friday was dismal and was not our best performance,” Dailey said. “We talked about it for an hour, deciding to not dw...

After having fought the last five miles or so of road destruction coming into Culbertson, the Hinsdale/Saco (H/S) contingent finally reached the home of the Bainville Bulldogs and got settled in for an afternoon/evening of very fine and entertaining volleyball. There were junior high, JV and varsity matches, so go grab a root beer from the fridge, turn up the volume and settle back to enjoy some v-ball. Watching the junior high girls, I was very pleased to see that the volleyball program will be solid for yet another six years or so. There is s...
Both Glasgow cross country teams came back home from Poplar with first place after competing in the first meet of the season on Saturday, August 31. Junior Josie Braaten was the fastest girl, running the three miles in 20 minutes and 33 seconds. Senior Rachael Zeiger took third place with a time of 21 minutes and 58 seconds. Glasgow High School's annual Red & White football scrimmage ended up in a 7-7 tie on Friday, Aug. 30. The game between the Reds and Whites was played in three periods: two of 15 minutes and one of five minutes, for a total of 35 minutes. The coaching staff wanted to see the kids play,...
The Glasgow volleyball team earned a seventh place at the Choteau invitational on Friday and Saturday, August 30-31. The Scotties missed the playoffs by one spot after playing six matches on Friday and seven on Saturday. Coach Lori Dailey was pleased with the result for this opening tournament of the season and described the weekend as “fairly successful.” She said she was proud of how the girls fared and competed on the court. “The girls banded together and played their hearts out,” Dailey said. “All the girls played quite a bit in a variety...
After a less than stellar performance in pool play, losing to Chinook in a close match and getting fully annihilated by Plentywood, the Wildfire went two and two and won a berth in bracket play at the Malta Invitational Volleyball Tourney last Saturday, August 30 in Malta. With every game, the ladies from Hinsdale/Saco (H/S) seemed to gather strength from each other and get stronger as the grueling day progressed. Remember friends, their first match was at 9 a.m. and the championship game wasn’t decided until about 7:30 that night. After knocki...
The Glasgow Junior High cross country team participated in the Poplar meet on Saturday, August 31. The boys finished first with 42 points, followed by Poplar (55), and Wolf Point (63). The girls only had three runners, and could not do anything against the other teams. Poplar won with 32 points. “It wasn’t a real big meet, but I thought all the kids competed real well,” coach Tim Phillips said. “For the boys, Bryce LaGare had some calf issues, but still managed to finish in the top 10.” The biggest contribution came from Merlin and Ellis McK...
Hello everyone! As your new sports editor, I am really excited to be here and can’t wait to cover such a strong and vivid sports community. If my name doesn’t sound English to you, that’s because it’s French! I was born in the south of France and arrived in the U.S. in 2010 to study journalism. I obtained my Multimedia Journalism degree from Simpson College, Iowa, in 2012 and got my first job in Southern Texas. How did I end up in Glasgow, you might ask? Well, life is full of surprises, and one such surprise hit me when I was offered the opp...

The first annual Larry Leddige Memorial Dart Tournament was held Aug. 16-17 at The Cottonwood in Glasgow. This event is named for dart player Larry Leddige, who passed away in May 2013. Larry was a great guy who loved his family and friends and also enjoyed his darts. This tournament is a benefit tournament, and organizers use the proceeds to give a little help to people with medical costs. It may not be much, but they hope people realize there are others out there willing to help. This year the...

Information about specific Block Management Area opportunities is available at all FWP offices and on the FWP website at fwp.mt.gov. Hunting Guides and most BMA maps also will be available on the FWP website. This y...
Montana's archery-only hunting season for deer, elk, antelope, wolf, mountain lion and black bear begins Sept. 7. The bighorn sheep archery season begins Sept. 5. A $10 bow and arrow license, plus the proper hunting license, is required during the deer, elk, antelope, black bear, wolf, mountain lion and bighorn sheep archery only season or to hunt in areas limited to only archery equipment. Depending on the species and hunting district, some licenses were available only by special drawing. For details on legal archery equipment and the...
Mostly the same faces but a new name and colors have been added to the list of teams for the upcoming District 1C volleyball season. The team formerly known as the Saco/Hinsdale Panthers has now become, by virtue of a team vote, the Hinsdale/Saco Wildfire. In this writer’s opinion, this is a good move for all concerned. Much like the MonDak Thunder: two towns merging to form one team as did Westby/Grenora. Others include Froid/Medicine Lake Red Hawks, Scobey/Opheim (stayed same as the Spartans) and Richey/Lambert Fusion. I fear that the next 5...
A half-dozen experienced hunters attended the hunter scoping session in Glasgow on Aug. 13 to give their comments on the proposed hunting seasons for 2014-2015. Comments will go to the Fish, Wildlife and Parks commission meeting on Oct. 10. FWP will present its proposal on Dec. 12, hold more public meetings and issue the final rule in February. Hunters and FWP wildlife managers discussed the slow recovery of deer and antelope from the devastating winter of 2011 and the EHD that came along that summer. They agreed that eagles and coyotes are...

Due to safety concerns, youths 12 and under can participate in all of the events except ones involving shotgun shooting. Shotguns, pellet guns, ammunition, targets and archery equipment will be provided at no cost, and participants between ages 12 and 18 can...

A dangerous chokepoint that migrating antelope encountered each year just west of Nashua now has one less hazard the animals will have to contend with. Old woven-wire and barbed wire fencing strung for about a mile along U.S. Highway 2 has long served as a potential barrier for pronghorn and other wildlife trying to cross the busy road and get over an adjacent set of Burlington Northern-Santa Fe train tracks. In fact, ground on both sides of the old fence – which was removed by a Montana F...
Jason Mitchell of the outdoor program Jason Mitchell Outdoors recently filmed a fishing segment on Fort Peck Lake. The show will highlight the trophy walleye fishing that make the lake famous. It is expected to be broadcast in April and June. "For trophy walleyes, Fort Peck remains one of the top destinations in the country and one of the best places I can think of for walleyes that are over 30 inches," Mitchell said. Mitchell fished during the production with Glasgow angler Ken Schmidt. "Ken...
