The Glasgow Scotties crushed Glendive 47-14 at Scottie field on Friday, Sept. 6, in the first game of the season. The Scotties played great football on both sides of the line throughout the entire game and earned an easy win. Despite the high temperatures on Sunday, August 25, 24 teams came out to support a great cause and get their daily dose of iron during the 15th Annual FMDH Foundation Open Golf Tournament. Each of the 24 teams registered, had breakfast, and were all ready to tee off by the 9 a.m. shotgun start. The Scotties girls and boys cross country teams finished in third and 14th place, respectively, at the Billings Invitational on Friday, Sept. 6. The girls earned an impressive third place with 112 points behind two AA teams, Billings West (70) and Billings Senior (74). A good result and a way to see how the team stands regarding bigger school teams. Coach Rod Karst was pleased with the result and the efforts put into it. The Scotties volleyball team came home from the two-day Chinook Invitational with a third-place finish after winning the consolation finals over Simms, 2-0. Shelby took the trophy home after defeating Cut Bank, 25-23, 25-24. The Scotties had a hard time getting into the tournament, according to coach Lori Dailey. Tom Flowers, a 25-year veteran of Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, has been named as the agency’s new Region 6 supervisor. In his new position, Flowers, 54, will supervise about 40 full-time employees in an administrative area that spans from the North Dakota and Saskatchewan borders to Sidney, Circle and Loma, and the Liberty County line west of Havre. After having fought the last five miles or so of road destruction coming into Culbertson, the Hinsdale/Saco (H/S) contingent finally reached the home of the Bainville Bulldogs and got settled in for an afternoon/evening of very fine and entertaining volleyball. There were junior high, JV and varsity matches, so go grab a root beer from the fridge, turn up the volume and settle back to enjoy some v-ball. Both Glasgow cross country teams came back home from Poplar with first place after competing in the first meet of the season on Saturday, August 31. As expected, the girls dominated the meet, finishing with 22 points and placing eight runners out of 11 in the top 15. Glasgow High School's annual Red & White football scrimmage ended up in a 7-7 tie on Friday, Aug. 30. Fans gathered in the stands at Scottie Field to have a look at this season’s team and were not disappointed. The coaching staff mixed up the varsity and junior varsity teams, offering a close and entertaining game. The Glasgow volleyball team earned a seventh place at the Choteau invitational on Friday and Saturday, August 30-31. The Scotties missed the playoffs by one spot after playing six matches on Friday and seven on Saturday. The Glasgow Junior High cross country team participated in the Poplar meet on Saturday, August 31. The boys finished first with 42 points, followed by Poplar (55), and Wolf Point (63). The girls only had three runners, and could not do anything against the other teams. Friday night lights are back. Glasgow High School will host its annual Red &White High School Football scrimmage at 7 p.m. this Friday, Aug. 30, at Scottie Field. The first annual Larry Leddige Memorial Dart Tournament was held Aug. 16-17 at The Cottonwood in Glasgow. This event is named for dart player Larry Leddige, who passed away in May 2013. Larry was a great guy who loved his family and friends and also enjoyed his darts. This tournament is a benefit tournament, and organizers use the proceeds to give a little help to people with medical costs. Fishin’ for the Cure, a Montana-based organization that builds public awareness of childhood cancer and raises funds to support childhood cancer research, hosted its sixth annual Montana fishing derby. The event held Aug. 17 at Rock Creek Marina on Fort Peck Reservoir was attended and supported by more than 200 gracious participants – with 39 fishing teams and nearly 100 fishermen – helping raise money for childhood cancer research. For the 2013 hunting season, about 1,240 landowners have enrolled about 7.8 million acres in Montana’s Block Management Program. Mostly the same faces but a new name and colors have been added to the list of teams for the upcoming District 1C volleyball season. The team formerly known as the Saco/Hinsdale Panthers has now become, by virtue of a team vote, the Hinsdale/Saco Wildfire. In this writer’s opinion, this is a good move for all concerned. A half-dozen experienced hunters attended the hunter scoping session in Glasgow on Aug. 13 to give their comments on the proposed hunting seasons for 2014-2015. Comments will go to the Fish, Wildlife and Parks commission meeting on Oct. 10. FWP will present its proposal on Dec. 12, hold more public meetings and issue the final rule in February. A free youth shooting and archery skills event is scheduled for Aug. 29 at the Glasgow Trap Club. The event – which will include clay pigeon, turkey silhouette and pellet-gun shooting stations, as well as an archery range with 3-D hunting targets – is open to all youths up to 18 years old.
