  • Mile High Experience

    Quinn Robinson, The Courier|Dec 18, 2013

Glasgow fourth grader Rance Rhoads comes across as shy when you first meet him. The shyness quickly fades away when you ask him about his recent trip to Denver as Rhoads finished third in the 8-9 year old age group in the annual Punt, Pass and Kick competition put on by the NFL. Rhoads took part in the competition this year thanks in large part of his parents suggesting he should. "My parents told me about [the competition]," Rhoads said. "Honestly, I thought I should try it." Try he did and...

    Quinn Robinson, The Courier|Dec 18, 2013

In a few short minutes, all the pain and agony felt this past football season was erased on the basketball court as the Glasgow boys exacted revenge against Baker on their way to a 63-35 victory. The Scotties jumped out at the tip, scoring the game's first 14 points. Baker head coach Jay Shumaker was forced to use an early timeout, but by that time the rout was on. "They had one game under their belt and I think probably a little hungry to get Baker tonight as well," said Shumaker. "I can't say...

  • Wrestlers Perform Well At Glasgow Invite

    Quinn Robinson, The Courier|Dec 18, 2013

Wrestling took center stage again last Friday as the Scotties hosted The Glasgow Invite. Sophomore Cody King and Senior Kevin Frigon took second place in their respective weight classes. King, 13-3 at 132 pounds this season, lost in the finals to Harlem's Teague Jones. Jones finished second in the state last year in his weight class and even after losing to Jones, King looks at the positives. "He [Jones] had second in the state last year so I don't feel too bad losing to him," said King. "It wou...

Two senior Scotties took fir...

  • Scotties Show Their Teeth

    Quinn Robinson, The Courier|Dec 11, 2013

The Glasgow boys team wasted no time picking up where they left off from last season as they beat Roundup, 73-33. The Scotties led 41-13 at halftime and put the game in cruise control during the second half. Roundup was held to single digits in scoring in three of the four quarters by a tenacious Scottie defense. "For the first game of the year we were pleased with everything that went on," said Scotties head coach Norm Braaten. Leading all scorers for the Scotties was senior Lane Herbert with...

  • Glasgow Wrestling Dominant

    Quinn Robinson, The Courier|Dec 11, 2013

The Glasgow Scotties wrestling team kicked off their season with a bang over the weekend at the Havre Invite. Sophomore Cody King was the big winner over the weekend placing fourth in his weight class as he went 8-1 in the two day tournament. King ultimately had to settle for fourth place in the tournament as he had wrestled the maximum allotted number of matches on the second day. "He reached that five match maximum before the match for third and fourth place," said Scotties head coach Trevor...

  • Ice Dawg Squirts Battle

    Carin Barnett, For The Courier|Dec 11, 2013

The Ice Dawg Squirt team headed to Kalispell’s outdoor rink this past weekend. Making the trip were Colter Barnett, Jack Cornwell, Dylan Hlad, Michael Hoyer, Gage Iman, Ian Peterson, Tatum Provencher, and Gage Siefert. The first game against Kalispell had a rocky start. At temperatures hovering near zero, Kalispell scored 30 seconds in and again 4 minutes later. The undermanned Dawgs struggled with positioning, while rotating in only two extra players. In the second period the Dawgs were down to six skaters, but managed to hold the period score...

  • Glasgow Girls Lose Opener

    Quinn Robinson, The Courier|Dec 11, 2013

The Glasgow girls basketball team fell to Roundup in the opening game of the season 58-49. This was the first time these two schools have met and even after a defeat, Scotties head coach Emilee Morehouse is already preparing for the next opponent. “It was a nonconference game so we just have to stay positive,” said Morehouse. Glasgow found itself up by one entering the fourth quarter, but in that quarter, Roundup outscored the Scotties 19-9 to secure the win. “They played hard the whole game” said Morehouse. “They pressed hard the whole tim...

  • Ice Dawgs Are All Bite

    Quinn Robinson, The Courier|Dec 4, 2013

A new year and a new opportunity. That's the outlook that the high school Ice Dawgs have entering the 2013 season with after a disappointing 2012 campaign. Coming off a split with Havre on the road a week ago, the Ice Dawgs have a nice layover, which allows for some fine tuning on the ice before their next game at home on December 14. Ice Dawgs goalie Harley Eliason likes the start his team has had so far and believes if the Dawgs work on the little things, a good season is ahead. "We just have...

  • A Class Of Its Own

    Quinn Robinson, The Courier|Dec 4, 2013

This weekend, Glasgow High School will host it’s first Class ‘C’ Showcase Basketball Tournament. The tournament will feature boys and girls basketball from Glasgow and surrounding communities as well as schools from outside the area such. Willie Thibault, activities director for Glasgow High, said an event like this has been discussed in previous years. “It’s something I’ve talked about for a couple of years,” Thibault said. • U19 Team Shooting For The No. 1 Spot

    Quinn Robinson, The Courier|Dec 4, 2013

Finishing in second place is bad enough when you do it once. It's unheard of when you do it twice – in the same season – as the U19 Ice Dawgs did last year. The Ice Dawgs are back on the ice as the 2013-14 season is under way and head coach JR Rasmusan sees his squad returning to their old form. "By the end of the season we should be very competitive," said Rasmusan. "We're capable of playing with anyone." In order to play with anyone, the Dawgs will stick with an aggressive style of play that h...

  • 34 Scotties Qualify For Academic All-State

    Nov 27, 2013

Scottie student athletes are earning plenty of success on an off the field and court these days. Thirty-four Glasgow High School student athletes, including cheerleaders, are Academic All-State Qualifiers with the Montana Coaches Association. It's more good news for a school and athletic program that won championships this fall in cross country, football and volleyball. The athletes and cheerleaders listed below earned a 3.5 or better GPA (on a 4.0 scale) for the first quarter and also earned a varsity letter in the MHSA sanctioned sport. They...

  • Ice Dawgs Silence Havre Boo Birds

    Mike Eliason, For The Courier|Nov 27, 2013

On Saturday the Ice Dawg high school team traveled to Havre for a pair of games against the Ice Hawks. As is normal in Havre, the games were hard-fought, physical affairs that saw a parade of players from both benches make their way to the penalty box. Unfortunately, Glasgow ended up on the wrong side of the score, being defeated 5-1 in the first game. The Dawgs' lone goal came on the power play from Ryan Padden with an assist being credited to Sam Schultz. On the bright side, even though Glasgow committed 11 penalties, it held the Hawks to...

  • Hinsdale/Saco Play Like Titans

    Virgil Vaupel, Courier Correspondent|Nov 27, 2013

According to Head Coach Kraig Nordahl of the Hinsdale/Saco Lady Titans, this team handles the ball well, shoots well, takes instruction well, rebounds well, defends well and fights for every point and rebound. Sounds like a very formidable opponent indeed, and that's what they proved to be as they put away the Opheim Lady Vikings for the 2013 junior high girls basketball championship last Friday at Hinsdale. Stay tuned for more after these words... I must tell you a little about the boys. I was...

On Saturday, Nov. 23, the Glasgow High School Speech and Drama team competed in the Roundup B & C Invitational against 13 other teams. It is not often that Glasgow is able to compete against southern teams such as Sweetgrass, Columbus and White Sulfur Springs. The next time Glasgow will see these teams will be at the State B competition early in 2014, which is being hosted in Glasgow. The team brought home the third-place trophy for Drama. This is due to the efforts of our remarkable drama competitors, including Kylie Cook who took home the fir...

    Ron Selden, FWP Region 6|Nov 27, 2013

Hunter numbers and reported harvests at the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Region 6 game check station outside Havre are still down when compared to past years. “Hunter numbers so far this year have only been about 2 percent lower than last year’s numbers, but they’re still down 38 percent from 2010 levels,” said Havre-area Wildlife Biologist Scott Hemmer. “Antelope and white-tailed deer are the two species that have seen the largest decreases in harvest.” Region 6 antelope and deer numbers were heavily impacted by several recent hard winters....

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|Nov 20, 2013

The Scotties football team's dream of bringing a state championship game back to the home field will have to wait another year. Glasgow lost to the Baker Spartans, 22-7, in the Class B semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 16, in Baker. Scotties fans, the band and cheerleaders packed the Spartans stands. In the end, the Spartans were simply a better and stronger team. The Spartans controlled both the ball and the clock for most of the game, while crippling Glasgow's offense. • Coach Liebelt Writes To Scottie Nation

Greg Liebelt, GHS Head Football Coach|Nov 20, 2013

A BIG THANKS TO SCOTTIE NATION!!! I wanted to take the opportunity to use this forum and let everyone out there who has supported and followed us along the way, know how grateful I am once again and what an honor it is to coach the Glasgow Scotties! I still have to pinch myself to think after growing up and idolizing the Scottie football teams, players and coaches as a kid, that I would someday be leading them. We wanted so bad to bring the championship game back home to Glasgow, but it just wasn’t in the cards this year. Although the game w...

  • On To The Semifinals

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|Nov 13, 2013

In their tenth game of the season, with a record of 8-1 coming into the state quarterfinal, the Scotties were used to cruising to easy victories, it seemed. And yet the Nov. 9, 2013 victory would become the hardest they had to fight for, facing not only the tough 2011 state champion Fairfield Eagles but also perhaps the sloppiest game Glasgow itself has played. Interceptions, fumbles, failed kicks, incomplete passes ... these anxieties punctuated the dramatic game that seemed to be highlighted b...

  • We Were Never Short On Heart

Lori Dailey, GHS Head Volleyball Coach|Nov 13, 2013

The divisional tournament is over, as is the Scottie Volleyball season. We fell to two great teams, Fairfield and Choteau, both of whom advanced to State. Although we fell, we can proudly say we didn’t fall apart. We never stopped trying. We forced them to earn every point. We gained their respect as individuals and as a team. In the words of Coach Ann Funk (Choteau), “We are champions because we play from the heart. We are winners because of our integrity, respect and sportsmanship.” My least favorite chore of coaching is entering the locke...

    Nov 13, 2013

In Games 1 and 2, the Scotties could not be stopped. Dalbey also led with 13 digs and 3 blocks. The Scotties won that match 25-8, 25-15, 19-25, 23-25, 17-15. The Fairfield Eagles proved to...

    Ron Selden, FWP Region 6|Nov 13, 2013

State wildlife officials are seeking tips from the public about the poaching of a mature bull elk on the Williamson Ranch Block Management Area south of Chinook. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Warden Dirk Paulsen said the elk was shot from the Lloyd Road just south of Cow Creek Reservoir in southern Blaine County on the night of Nov. 2. The meat was left to waste on the private property that is enrolled in FWP's Block Management Program. "The bull was discovered by hunters driving the road...

  • Merger Or Co-Op? That Is The Question

    Virgil Vaupel, Thanks For Listening|Nov 13, 2013

The changing face of Montana class C boys and girls sports is becoming more evident daily. Small towns across the state are losing population at an alarming rate, causing schools to lose enrollment, forcing school closures. In the school year 1999-2000, there were just two school basketball co-ops in the entire state. Scobey/Peerless and Flaxville/Outlook. Of those four schools, just one is still in operation. It is now a co-op between Scobey and Opheim. Peerless, Flaxville and Outlook are no more. There are now 104 schools supporting 88 Class...
