The Glasgow girls basketball team headed into the Northern B Divisionals at Conrad on a high. After struggling on and off most of the regular season, the Scotties played remarkably well in the District 2B tournament in Malta at the end of February. That performance allowed Glasgow to advance to the Divisionals this past weekend and although the competition got more difficult, the Scotties did what they've grown used to doing all year: stepping up to the challenge and never backing down....
After lying dormant for 13 years, the Hinsdale Belly Bump tournament has been revived in Hinsdale. Levi Capdeville and Nate Remmick decided this was too good of a tournament to lie buried in the archives so they got together and set it up for last Friday and Saturday at the Hinsdale High School gym to the delight of a couple hundred fans. The teams consist of say, some 2000-03 players, or some 1993-96 players and before. Well, you get the picture. Current high school players are not eligible. Lloyd Jones, Kurt Rosendahl, Art Arnold, Johnny...
The Glasgow Ice Dawgs high school team competed in the MAHA State Hockey Tournament over the weekend in Billings and went 0-2-1 in that stretch. The first game against Helena, the Ice Dawgs fell in a hole early and never receovered as Helena went on to win the game 8-1. Glasgow’s lone goal of the game came by way of Hunter Losleben as he took a nice pass from Parker Kulczyk and found the back of the net. In game two for the Ice Dawgs, it was a much different story. Glasgow and Bozeman went neck and neck the entire game which ended in a 3-3 t...
The Glasgow boys basketball team has been able to keep it cool, calm and collected throughout most of the year. With a State B Tournament appearance coming Thursday, the Scotties show no change in how they are approaching the biggest tournament in their high school careers. “We’re kind of just being ourselves,” said Chase Fossum. “Obviously once we get to Bozeman, we’ll lock in a little more.” Scotties point guard Jason Thibault said that although the team wants to bring a title home for Glasgow, they have to make sure to stick to what they’r...
The Valley Event Center hosted the 2014 MAHA PeeWee State Tournament, but unfortunately for fans of the Glasgow Ice Dawgs, there was no home cooking for the home team. Glasgow lost all three of their games in the tournament on their way to a sixth place finish. It was a disappointing finish to the season for a team that showed tremendous heart and promise throughout. Glasgow came into the tournament with a 10-5-1 record and seeded fifth, but that didn't prevent Ice Dawgs head coach Pat Braaten...

The feeling all year among fans of Glasgow boys basketball was that there was something special here with this group. On Saturday night, the team proved that theory right in front of a raucous home crowd as Glasgow avenged a loss to Malta a week earlier in the District 2B championships by winning the Northern B Divisional championship 62-59. When the final buzzer sounded and sent the packed house into a frenzy, no one appeared to be as happy as Scotties head coach Norm Braaten. "We were...
After a stunning victory at districts the Hinsdale Lady Raiders continued their winning ways at divisionals with wins over Culbertson (33-31 whew!!), Fairview (45-30) and over Saco/Whitewater. More on these games after these words from Grannie Grumpy's Grits and Gravy House located at fourth and main in beautiful downtown Toenny. Welcome back sports fans. In Hinsdale's first game the Lady Raiders faced the Lady Cowgirls of Culbertson and with a half time lead 22-8 the Hinsdale fans and faithful...
The Raiders of Hinsdale started off the 2014 divisional tournament against the Fairview Warriors and through the first quarter it was a tie ball game with Lukas Johnson getting a nice block in the first couple minutes of play. The block sent a message to the Warriors that Luke was not to be trifled with. Hinsdale put a 10-0 run on the Warriors behind a three from Dallas Capdeville to start the second stanza and a three from Kyle Albus at the buzzer to end the half, Hinsdale up 21-15. Fairview caught up a tad bit in the third, out scoring the...
Mariah Stein and Abby Mehling have signed letters of intent to attend Dakota College at Bottineau and play softball for the Lady Jacks. Stein is a catcher-outfielder and Mehling is a pitcher-infielder. Both girls currently play for the Scotties. Stein has been a standout for the past two years and has a chance to become one of Glasgow's all-time offensive players if she has a strong senior season. "She is on track to set all our offensive records," coach Mark Falcon said. "She is also a very...
This past weekend the Ice Dawg Squirts battled in the Squirt B State Tournament. Playing a strong Bozeman team, Glasgow relied on its defense of Ian Peterson, Jack Cornwell, Tori Pehlke, Brooklyn Schmidt, Kylie Lagerquist and Klaire Krumweide. Despite Bozeman scoring seven goals, the Ice Dawgs never gave up. Colter Barnett scored the loan goal, assisted by Michael Hoyer. Kalispell came out fast scoring 6 goals in the 1st period. Barnett scored to get Glasgow on the board. Kalispell added 5 more. Tatum Provencher, relentless with rebounds, score...
Divisional play opens 2:30 p.m. Thursday for coach Emilee Morehouse's Glasgow Scotties. The girls will take on Choteau in the second divisional basketball game at the Conrad High School gymnasium. The other four squads play Thursday night: Harlem vs. Fairfield at 6:30 p.m. and Wolf Point and Conrad in the nightcap at 8. See page 3B for tournament brackets and booster greetings for the Scotties and the charging Lady Raiders of Hinsdale....
This past weekend was a huge success for the U-14 girls hockey team. Glasgow's road to the title started with an opening round game against Missoula. Missoula came out swinging with a first period goal at only three minutes in. Glasgow returned the favor and then some scoring three goals in the period. Kennedy Schmidt started the scoring off as she was assisted by Jesi Kennedy. Emily Kolstad had a nice unassisted goal of her own before Jesi got in on the scoring action with an assist from...
It was deja vu for the Lady Raiders of Hinsdale as they thwarted Saco/Whitewater's attempt at a perfect 19-0 season by winning the district 3C girls basketball championship last Saturday evening at the Wolf Point gym just as they had done last year at Malta. Who would have thought that three seniors, one junior, one sophomore, one freshman and three eighth graders could put up the numbers the Hinsdale Lady Raiders had put up this season losing just two games and both to Saco/Whitewater. And...
The Glasgow Highlander wrestlers were in action this weekend at the Poplar Invitational. Over 250 local wrestlers crammed into the Poplar High School gymnasium for an action packed day of competition. Thirty eight future Scottie wrestlers made the trip and it was a successful weekend for each of the young competitors. This tournament kicked off the folkstyle season, after competing in freestyle and Greco the past month and half. Fourteen individuals were able to claim championships and took home trophies for their accomplishment. “We’ve had...
The Nashua Porcupines, sporting a 7-5 conference record squared off against the 10-2 Hinsdale Raiders in the 4:30 p.m. game on Friday and it turned out to be one of the better contests of the tourney. There were five lead changes and three ties in the game. Nashua’s Trafton Mayhew scored first for the Porcupines with a sweet mid-range jump shot. Then Lukas Johnson scored a basket in the paint for the Raiders. Mayhew rippled the rope again and Hinsdale’s Kyle Albus lit it up from beyond the arc. Nashua’s Kyle Gorman thought “if that Kyle ca...
Districts are over and both Glasgow teams are still standing. On the boys side, many didn't get the end result that they wanted, a District championship, but all is well, especially since Divisonals start at Glasgow High School on Thursday. "We can't ask for anything more," said Glasgow boys head coach Norm Braaten. "We have our own beds, our own food, a good draw." Don't forget the Scottie faithful. Earlier in the week, word started making its way around time encouraging Scottie fans to show...
Starting out with a bang. That's exactly how Glasgow wrestling head coach Trevor Newman described the first day of the State Meet in Billings on Friday. "I was please that we had four of the five reach the second day of the tournament," Newman said. Day two of the tournament was a different story. All of the momentum going into the second day was lost as Glasgow came crashing back down to earth going 0-6 on the day. Even with the dismal performance by the team in day two, Kasey Seyfert was able...
It's playoff time. The regular season has come to an end and now it's time to see how special this season can be for the Glasgow boys basketball team. Glasgow secured the No. 1 seed in the District 2B tournament that starts on Thursday as they won their final two games of the season against Malta and Poplar. Senior guard Lane Herbert, who's been battling a foot injury the past couple of weeks, got the start in Glasgow's final game of the season at home on Saturday, much to the surprise of fans...
Scobey came to Hinsdale last Friday to contest the mettle of the Hinsdale Raiders and discovered Hinsdale’s mettle is metal. It was the last home game ever for Hinsdale’s three senior girls, Whitney Molina, Bethany Lacock and Chadaya Christensen who were all honored during senior night. The Lady Raiders with three seniors, one junior and one sophomore in the starting roles were ably assisted by one junior, one freshman and three eighth-graders on the bench. The Lady Raiders went into this game in second place in conference with an 11-2 rec...
Glasgow's Ryan Padden had a breakout weekend of hockey scoring four goals in a single game and tallying the game winning goal to lead the Montana IceDogs U18 boys to victory in the Salt Lake City Shootout held President's Day Weekend. Padden is second on the team in scoring and is averaging over a point per game. The hard charging forward anchors the team penalty kill, confounding opponents with his speed and tenacity on the puck. With the score tied 2-2 late in the third period of the...
The Missouri/Milk River chapter of Ducks Unlimited will be hosting its 28th Annual Fundraising banquet in support of DU’s 77th year of existence on Saturday, March 8 at the Cottonwood Inn with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. Ken Jansa, officer with the local chapter of Ducks Unlimited said that this banquet has been quite beneficial for this area. "We are very fortunate to be able to say that DU spends a lot of money locally and conserves many acres for the benefit of people and wildlife," Jansa said. The money banquet attendees spend at this e...
Glasgow wrestling had a nice showing at Divisionals this past weekend as five Scotties qualified for the State meet coming up this weekend in Billings. Kasey Seyfert, Cody King, Tony Kaiser, Kevin Frigon and Tanner Roness all qualified in their respective weight classes. Glasgow head coach Trevor Newman is happy with the performance his wrestlers have given him all year and excited to see what can happen in Billings, especially with Cody King. King is coming off a stellar freshman year and is...
Rachael Zeiger casually walks into the gym of Glasgow High School after school one day and immediately walks onto the basketball court where senior boys guard Lane Herbert is shooting by himself before practice. "Lane, do you need a rebounder?" Zeiger asked. "Sure," Herbert replied as he continued to drain his shots. Rachael Zeiger didn't always know that she was meant to be a runner. All she did know is that she is super competitive in whatever sport she plays. Growing up, Rachael admitted...
When you’re hot, you’re hot as my old non-acquaintance Jerry Reed once didn’t tell me and that is exactly what the Raiders, boys and girls are today. The boys are leading the 3C with a record of 11-1 (15-1 overall) and the girls are in second place with 10-2 (14-2 overall) as we head into the final week of conference play. Thirty-two games, combined Raiders and Lady Raiders, with just three losses. That’s huge folks. And by this bumbled writer’s estimation The Raiders and Lady Raiders are peaking at just the right time. On Friday Scobey wi...
