The Glasgow Scotties open their conference schedule this weekend, but not before two more Class A games this week. Glasgow coaching great John LaBonty and four others will be inducted this summer into the Montana Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Among the others is Paul Barta, who coached five years at GHS in the 1980s. LaBonty was a head mentor for 28 of his 36 years coaching, the last 34 years at Glasgow. A 36-year MCA member, LaBonty has served in a variety of sports and positions, but it is in track and field and volleyball where he has created a legacy. The Scottie Qualifiers Meet at GHS next week is looking like a box of chocolates. You just don't know what you're going to get. But here they go. Montana spring weather permitting, the Glasgow track and field team will host a state qualifiers meet Monday, April 11, at Scottie Field. Warmer temperatures and melted ice mean the annual walleye spawning operation on Fort Peck Reservoir is beginning early this year and will soon be in full swing. Volunteers are always welcome, and needed, for the success of this operation. Three Scotties are more than on track to qualify for the Class B state tournament. They're there. The homegrown qualifiers at Glasgow's own invite Saturday were Josie Braaten in the 3,200 meter run, Dana Hughes in shot put and discus, and Benji Phillips in javelin. The young 2-0 Scotties softball team has season opening wins over Class A Havre and Dawson County under its belt going into the game Thursday at Williston. Skipper Mark Falcon's visiting squad led throughout in its 6-4 victory over the Blue Ponies on March 24, then played catchup to beat the Red Devils, 8-7, in its home opener March 26. “The team is playing good,” Falcon told The Courier. “It's really early in the season. The Glasgow Area Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture is launching its annual Longest Dam Race T-Shirt Contest. The 21st annual Longest Dam Race will take place June 20 at Kiwanis Park in Fort Peck. The annual logo contest is meant to spur the imaginations of the young and old alike. The chamber is calling all artists to create a concept design that uses the events of the race along with the powerhouses as the theme. The Opheim Rodeo Club met at the Mint Bar on Monday, March 2, and decided to have the annual rodeo at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 28. The annual Skate for a Cure hockey game was also this year's kickoff for Relay for Life. The Guns N Hoses came to the match looking to claim the trophy that the novice Ice Dawgs had secured the year before. Guns N Hoses showed their determination and started the scoring quickly. The Glasgow Hoop Stars – a group of sixth-grade girls basketball players – carried the torch for the home teams at last weekend's 17th annual Jeff Jurgens Memorial Basketball Tournament. The Stars beat the Regina Jr. Cougars, 26-23, in the sixth-grade bracket at East Side School to gain Glasgow one of the 12 championships contested for among 84 teams from the fourth grade to high school ages. The softball team opened with a 6-4 win Tuesday over Havre in a game added to take place before the regularly scheduled opener at 3:30 p.m. this Thursday against visiting Glendive. The golf team, meanwhile, will open April 7 at the Forsyth Invitational and skip this Friday's previously scheduled opener at Shelby. Now it's official. The 2014-15 Scottie boys basketball and wrestling teams played with smarts. Each received the MHSA/Army National Guard Academic All Team Award as the top academic team in its sport in Montana Class B during the winter season. The wrestlers led the state with a 3.370 grade point average during a season in which the team sent six members to State and placed highly or won a number of invitationals. Year 17 is shaping up like a real diaper dandy for hundreds of young players at this weekend's Jeff Jurgens Memorial Basketball Tournament. The 84 teams, including nine from Regina, Sask., exceed last year's total of about 80 and will compete at five Glasgow venues.
