  • Here We Are Again: The 2016 Divisional Basketball Tournament

    Virgil Vaupel, Courier Correspondent|Feb 24, 2016

Since 2007 at least one of the three towns that now make up the North Country Mavericks have sent one or more teams to state tournaments either in football (with Glasgow or Malta), volleyball, basketball or track. 2016 has creepily creeped up on us and here we are again looking at maybe another trip to the big dance. The Lady Mavericks of Saco/Hinsdale/Whitewater, a newly founded triad, just won the 3C girls basketball district tourney, as well as the 3C conference championship sporting a...

  • Lady Scotties Place 2nd in Districts

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Feb 24, 2016

It was the Lady Scotties' first showing in a district championship game since 2012. Of course, they were matched up against the undefeated Malta M-Ettes. Although anything can happen during tournaments, the Scotties were unable to upset their rival, closing out the tournament with a 47-29 loss. The greatest parts of the game for the Lady Scotties were the first three points, and the last three points of the contest, with a whole lot of good stuff in-between. To start off the game, Glasgow claimed the lead with a two-point shot from Abbi...

  • Poplar Upsets Malta in District 2B

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|Feb 24, 2016

It appeared that everyone who wasn’t wearing blue cheered for the Poplar Indians. Spirit soared high on the Glasgow High School hardwood Saturday night, as packed bleachers witnessed the 3-5 #3 seed Indians beat the 8-0 #1 seed Malta Mustangs in District 2B championship, 75-69, in good old-fashioned ways. Quick-footed defense, reliable shooting, and low turnovers were how Poplar corralled the visibly uncomfortable Mustangs. Even with a height disadvantage, the Indians matched Malta on the rebounds and, playing with confident energy, took o...

The District 2B basketball tournament, for both girls and boys, will open at GHS gymnasium this Thursday night, Feb. 18. Therefore, Harlem and 5-seed Wolf Point...

  • Lady Scotties Lose to Malta, Defeat Wolves

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Feb 17, 2016

Glasgow had a few tough games to finish out their regular season. Traveling to Malta Thursday night, the Lady Scotties faced Malta for the second time this season and recorded their second loss to the rival M-Ettes. Glasgow could not compete with the height and quickness of the M-Ettes, who shut down the Scotties offensively and defensively. With 28 turnovers in the game and a dismal 32 percent success at the free-throw line, the Lady Scotties failed to make an impression against the undefeated...

  • Learn to Skate, Learn to Skate Better

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Feb 17, 2016

Kim Girard has been skating almost as long as she's been walking. She was born to a pair of professional skaters who taught skating and ice dancing, and began skating herself when she was two-and-a-half years old. Girard grew up in a skating family, spending many hours and days on the ice at rinks in Canada – one of which her parents managed when she was about five or six years old. As a matter of fact, Girard's mother was on the ice when she went into labor with her. "I guess teaching is in t...

Girls Georgie Kulczyk / The Courier The Nashua Porcupines hosted the Glasgow Scotties on Thursday night with two JV games and two varsity games. The bleachers held a respectable number of fans for both teams, which is one benefit of the proximity of the communities. Glasgow gained possession of the ball and Khloe Krumwiede claimed the first 2-point basket of the game. The Lady Scotties...

  • Pucks, Penalties and Prom-posals

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Feb 10, 2016

The U19 Lady Ice Dawgs finished their regular season with a shut-out against the Williston Coyotes on Saturday. Most of the action during the game was on the half of the ice the Coyotes were tending. The puck didn't make it in the vicinity of senior goalie Autumn Gault very often. When it did, she denied the goal without effort. In the first period of the game, Glasgow scored four goals. With her first of four game goals, Kennedy Schmidt sent the first puck between the pipes with an assist from...

  • Decisive Win over Poplar Brings Scotties Closer to Tournament

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|Feb 3, 2016

The Scottie boys rose to the occasion and got the win they needed. And they didn't just scrape by with coming-down-to-the-wire free throws. They beat the Poplar Indians by 15 points at the Moccasin Square Garden on Jan. 29. It was their highest winning margin over a conference foe so far this season. Any conference win they can muster will help them avoid the playoff game between the fourth and fifth seeds, a game in which the loser will be barred from the district tournament. The tournament is...

  • U19 Girls Go 3-1 Against NoDak Teams

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Feb 3, 2016

Friday night was not a good night for the Lady Ice Dawgs. Facing off against the U19 girls from Bottineau, they were unable to score even a single goal. Senior goalie, Autumn Gault was able to deny 38 goals, but it wasn't enough to stop Bottineau. They managed to score six times – twice on power plays, and the game ended with a score of 6-0. With a good nights rest behind them, Glasgow hit the ice Saturday to take on Langdon in a late morning game. In a nearly penalty free effort, the Lady I...

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Feb 3, 2016

It was a good match-up between the Nashua Porcupines and the Dodson Coyotes. The boys and girls met in the Nashua Gymnasium for Friday night’s contests. For the boys, it appeared to be a battle of the stats between the top two scorers of the game, starting senior Lane Nickels of Nashua and Tyrese Messerly of Dodson. Nickels scored 9 of his 15 points from beyond the arc; Messerly answered back with 12 of his 21 coming from downtown. At the free-throw line, Nickels went 2 for 2, while Messerly sunk 5 of 5.
