  • Manners Matter: How To Share The River

    FWP|Jun 17, 2015

Montana’s welcoming summer waters annually draw anglers, hikers, wildlife viewers, campers, floaters and boaters into the outdoors because it’s still easy to have a great summer experience on Montana’s rivers. The key is river etiquette, a mix of common sense, courtesy, and respect to minimize one party’s impact on another party’s good time. Here are some examples of basic river etiquette. Respect People’s Space and Privacy—The point at which someone feels crowded is subjective, but every outdoor activity requires space. On the river, mainta...

  • Reds Win Five and Lose One At Home and Away

    James Walling, The Courier|Jun 10, 2015

The Glasgow Reds won their first two home games of the season handily at Bill Connors Field June 3, against the Miles City Mavericks. The score for game 1 was 12-1, with the second game clocking in at 13-2. The stomping was not too much of a surprise to Head Coach Jack Sprague. "They're rebuilding from least season," he explains. "We played well and the scores were a little bit one-sided." Miles City had trouble with numbers, with many players down from what started out this season as a full...

  • George Brothers Come Out On Top In The 2015 Milk River Catfish Classic

    For The Courier|Jun 10, 2015

For the sixteenth year in a row, Northeast Montana was treated to a great show. The Milk River Catfish Classic took place over the weekend in Glasgow, Montana. Fishermen came from near and far to try and climb to the top of the Cat Classic mountain and take home the famed "traveling trophy." The Cat Classic never seems to disappoint and this year 67 teams weighed in fish. Stable water conditions gave way to many limits of five catfish throughout the tournament field. Bigger fish did prove...

  • Wall-Eyed: Idle Chatter and Received Wisdom on Area Fishing

    James Walling, The Courier|Jun 10, 2015

The secrets of local fishing here in Valley County are a mystery to me. Thankfully, local sportsman Gene Moore from Lakeridge Motel and Tackle and Marc Kloker from the FWP have teamed-up to provide me with a balanced (if occasionally oppositional) short course on the ins-and-outs of dredge cuts, tempting bait, and local fishing hotspots. This is the first installment. Enjoy! To begin with, I asked Gene for a little gossip and he delivered the dirt along with a touch of the obvious thrown in for good measure. The typical question for customers...

  • FWP 'Kids to Fish' Program Allows Youths to Borrow Gear & Tackle for Free

    Marc Kloker, For The Courier|Jun 10, 2015

A popular Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Region 6 program that allows children and their families to check out free fishing rods and tackle is in full swing again this year. Just in time for summer fishing, FWP staff is in the process of restocking the 49 (and counting) different location sites across Montana's Hi-Line. The "Kids to Fish" program lets youngsters check out fishing rods, reels and basic tackle, such as hooks, bobbers and sinkers. Typically, eight rods are at each location, and a...

  • Thunder Places Third At First Meet Of The Season

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jun 10, 2015

The small community of Harlem, Mont. has an oasis right in the middle of town, the city pool. This past weekend, they hosted the first swim meet of the season and the Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder Swim Team was there to compete. Overall, the Thunder had a strong showing as 13 swimmers competed in a total of 43 events, which included three relays. The first meet is typically low-key and this one was no exception. There were several events in different age groups that had only one swimmer competing....

  • GHS All-Sports Banquet Resurrected

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jun 3, 2015

It takes a village to raise a child. Or, in this case, it takes a community to produce outstanding athletes. Sponsored by the Scottie Booster Club, the GHS All-Sports Athletic Banquet was held Tuesday, May 26th in the St Raphael's Gymnasium. The banquet was resurrected by current GHS activity director, Brenner Flaten, who hosted the event. Keynote speaker was Jeff Graham from Belt, Mont. Graham teaches middle school and high school history, weight training, and K-12 P.E. He is the head coach for...

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|Jun 3, 2015

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|Jun 3, 2015

In the opening round of conference games in Billings on May 30-31, the Glasgow Reds found themselves duplicating results with two different teams. The Reds A played the Billings Cardinals for a double header on Saturday, and the Billings Blue Jays on Sunday. The Reds took a close loss, 4-3, in the first game of each double header. They followed with big wins in round two. The hometown fans shall look forward to the Reds' first home game, scheduled for Wednesday, June 3 at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. The...

  • Scottie Boys Bring Home Third Place

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 27, 2015

Eight-hundred and thirty-eight miles, 22 athletes, seven coaches, two managers and one Scottie cruiser. That's just part of what it takes to attend a state track meet. Coach Tim Phillips and his crew of coaches and athletes made the trek across the state to Kalispell to do just that. They were followed sporadically by a caravan of family and friends hoping to cheer the Scotties on to victory. Former coach John Labonty spent both days at the meet as well – to the delight of most every athlete o...

  • Scottie Softball Exits State Tournament Early

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|May 27, 2015

It wasn't the outcome they had hoped for. The team that has built success from powerful bats found itself outhit by their Western Montana opponents. Adding a few costly errors into the mix, the Glasgow softball team exited the state tournament in Belgrade on day two. The Scotties dropped the first game to Florence-Carlton 11-1. They stayed alive by narrowly beating Eastern 4-seed Shepherd 8-6 in an extra inning, then lost out of the double elimination to the eventual second-place team, Ronan,...

  • Reds 2, Richland County Patriots 3

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|May 27, 2015

The Glasgow Reds baseball team lost a friendly pickup game in Sidney on May 20. The Reds got on board first with one run at the top of the second inning. Sidney answered back with one in the fourth and two in the fifth inning. Reds scored again in the sixth, but did not mount enough offense to turn the tide. Reds Ryan Padden pitched four innings and struck out two, while Jake Kolstad pitched two innings, striking out one. They walked four and yielded only two hits. However, with one error made b...

  • Catfish Classic Tournament Returns for 16th Year In Glasgow

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|May 27, 2015

Not only a local favorite fishing tournament, but Brenner Flaten, who has helped run and organize the event every year for 16 years, says it’s one of the top five fishing events in the nation. The tournament is so popular that Flaten said the tournament for this year was full 358 days before the tournament began. Coming to Glasgow for the weekend will be 80 two-person teams who will have eight hours to catch the biggest catfish they can grab in the local Milk River. The Milk River Catfish Classic is one of four circuit tournaments under the M...

  • FWP Seeking Public Comment on Changes in Fishing Regulation

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|May 27, 2015

The Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) have been making their rounds along the Hi-Line looking for public comment and questions on a few regulation changes. Comments need to be in by May 31. They made their stop in Glasgow last week and explained that there weren’t a lot of big changes in the works, and that has made for a fairly quiet public commenting period this year. Changes in our area, Region 6, include specifying more clearly the waters where use of live bait is allowed, prohibiting bow fishing for shortnose gar in the Fort Peck D...

  • Class C Meet Qualifies Athletes To State

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 20, 2015

Class C coaches wear many hats. They are coaches first, but also play the role of parent, counselor, referee, physical therapist, and more. Sometimes they have to fake it 'til they make it. There was a little of that this season for Ryen Falkenstern, of Nashua, and Lisa Beus, of Hinsdale. Falkenstern initially was going to be the track and field coach just for the lady Porcupines. He stepped up for the boys' team when things didn't work out with the prospective coach for them. This is Beus'...

  • Scottie Softball Sets The Bar, Heading To State

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|May 20, 2015

"It'd be nice to be in the championship," said Sadie Sukut, one of the two senior leaders on the Glasgow softball team. "Yeah. A trophy would be sweet," said Autumn Hopkins, the other senior. The 2015 team started out as a young and inexperienced team. But over the course of the season, they have battled, rallied, set goals and repeatedly reached them. They hold an impressive 17-2 record going into state this weekend. Head coach Mark Falcon wants his squad to "finish strong". After beating Cut...

  • Even Through the Wind and Rain, Scotties Go to State

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 20, 2015

We raise 'em right in Montana. There's no doubt in my mind. It was truly a miserable day at the North/East B divisional track meet on Saturday, but from the athletes to the volunteers, not a single "whine" was heard. If anyone was whining, it all stopped when the Glasgow boys and girls swept the meet and brought home the titles of divisional champs (the first time in school history that both boys and girls claimed the divisional title two years in a row). It was all smiles and hugs after that....

  • If You Care, Leave Them There

    MT FWP|May 20, 2015

Every spring Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks issues a message to Montanans to leave new born fawns, birds, and other infant wildlife where people find them. "If you care, leave them there," said Ron Aasheim, spokesman for Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks in Helena. Aasheim said that most birds, for instance, learn to fly from the ground up, and not from the nest. "Whether you find a fawn or fledgling bird under a tree in a neighbor's yard or bunny under a bush it's important to know that wild...

  • State Golfers Don't Place At The Top, But Show A Personal Best

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 20, 2015

Scottie girl golfers gained some wonderful experience last week at the state golf meet – including the part when they had 50-plus people watching them on the first tee box. At least that’s what Coach Dave Riggin thought was wonderful. “They’ve never experienced that before. The whole thing was great for the returning girls to experience,” said Riggin. “With two brand new girls and a second year golfer on the team this year, we will still have a young team next season.” As for their overall performance, the Scottie girls placed eleventh out...

  • Track Takes District By Storm

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 13, 2015

They showed up, they gave it their all and they walked away with respect and titles. Glasgow boys and girls dominated at the district track meet held in Wolf Point on Saturday, with both teams bringing home the title of district champs. Forty-three new personal records were accomplished, and the list of state qualifiers grew by three – girls 1600-meter relay, Chase Fossum in the 400-meter, and Luke Breigenzer in the 110-meter hurdles. The boys claimed the top spot - beating Wolf Point by 122 p...

  • Reds Pick Up First Win, Moms Treated To Pitching Dual

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|May 13, 2015

It's the season of sunflower seeds, hot dogs, and sunscreen. The Glasgow Reds traveled to Havre on Sunday, May 10 to open their season with some Mother's Day baseball. After a small ceremony to celebrate the mothers in attendance, the double header showcased the younger players from both sides in the first game. Reds B Kasey Seyfert started on the mound, followed by Brayden Jackson and the closer, Hunter Losleben. There was good rotation of players, with the whole roster getting some game time....

  • Scotties Softball Enters Divisional as Strong Second Seed

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|May 13, 2015

The Glasgow Scottie softball team knows how to battle. Coming from behind to beat two tough opponents last weekend-including going to the extra inning-has the girls feeling confident as they enter the Eastern B-C Divisional Tournament in Conrad, May 15-16. "These girls dig deep and work hard. Six times this season we've had comeback wins. Our team gets along well, they stay positive and cheer each other on. They work really hard and I am proud of these girls," said head coach Mark Falcon. At the...

  • Box Elder Creek Sampling Finished

    Marc Kloker, For The Courier|May 13, 2015

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and community volunteers recently sampled Box Elder Creek Reservoir (Bolster Dam) on the outskirts of Plentywood as part of their continued commitment to the fisheries in the Plentywood area. The sampling identified many interesting findings, and a few concerns as well. Region 6 fisheries biologists Tyler Haddix and Dave Fuller met with Plentywood community volunteers on the evening of April 14. Together, they set gill and trap nets, and also used electrofishing te...
