The Saco-Hinsdale Wildfire took it to the Brockton Lady Warriors last Friday in Hinsdale to the cheers of a small but very supportive crowd. I keep telling youse guys to come out and watch some volleyball. It's different than your grannies' volleyball from back in the day when it might take nearly a fortnight to score a point making the games last forever. These days points are made on every serve, greatly accelerating the game and making it much more exciting. That's one reason I decided to...
The time isn't necessarily now, but it's getting there. Glasgow XC hosts its annual midseason invitational this Saturday at Kiwanis Park in Fort Peck and everyone – the girls, the boys, Coach K – is looking for some serious improvement. The Scotties consider the 3-mile course, nice and flat, as a land of opportunity and speed. With a month to go before State at Helena, cranking it up before the home crowd sounds like a plan. "We hope to cut some time," coach Rod Karst told The Courier. "We know...
Greetings, Courier sports readers. The search is over for a new sports editor. It's me. Having filled in recently as an interim sports editor, I've loved getting back into sports writing. So the decision was made for me to become the sports guy and to bring on someone else to handle ad sales. In addition, The Courier welcomes back Virgil Vaupel as a sports correspondent. Double V has ended his sports writing retirement and is back on the Hinsdale beat. Janet Bailey will continue contributing Opheim sports reports to The Courier. Meanwhile, we...
After a midweek trip to Glendive, the Scottie volleyball teams came home Tuesday night with mixed reviews. The C squad prevailed and won their match in three straight games, shocking the Red Devils with their tough serving and successful offense – and maintaining a spotless record. The JV and varsity squads were not quite as lucky, falling in three and four games, respectively. "Part of the challenge can definitely be attributed to illness and injury,” coach Lori Dailey told The Courier. “We have to use a lot of players in uncomfortable posit...
The Glasgow Scotties hosted the Baker Spartans on Sept. 12 for the homecoming game. Glasgow got off to a great start and stayed sharp throughout the game, defeating Baker 14-0 in front of a packed hometown crowd. Now with a 3-0 record, Glasgow finally broke a losing streak against the Spartans. Glasgow shook off its habit of a sloppy first quarter and capitalized on Baker's turnovers and penalties. It was a physical and hard-hitting game, as was expected between these two rivals. Glasgow had...
The football Scotties did their part, blanking Baker. So did the volleyball Scotties, getting intense with Glendive and beating Wolf Point. But the XC Scotties, now their Homecoming Week success was double the fun. The boys won the Malta Invitational. The girls won the Malta Invitational. How far can these two teams go? "It's looking pretty promising for the boys," Walker Allen, the team's top runner at Malta, told The Courier before practice Tuesday. The outlook isn't just for this season....
This rebuilding season for Glasgow's volleyball Scotties continues with some positive payoff. The varsity this past week split its first two 2014 home matches in a competitive manner – losing to Dawson County, beating Wolf Point. Rival Malta visits this Thursday. GHS coach Lori Dailey described the home opener against Glendive last Thursday as "quite a showcase for all three Scottie teams." She said the JV team "played very well" in its win and the C squad picked up an "intense win," taking v...
Dallas Capdeville, the Hinsdale High School senior who runs, tackles and punts for the undefeated Glasgow Scotties football team, is getting some statewide airtime. Northern Sports Network's Rocky Erickson profiles the comeback kid on a recent radio piece now streaming online. Rocky's "Montana Sports Headlines" tend to stay posted for awhile, so if you haven't heard it yet, just search for "Northern Sports Network" and you'll find it pretty quickly. The headline is "Dallas Capdeville Makes It...
It looks like the Scotties have a habit of experiencing a shaky start, then knowing how to get back on track. That was the pattern after Glasgow's second game of the season. The Scotties fought hard and won a come-from-behind victory over the home team Dawson County Red Devils, 29-14, on Sept. 5. The first quarter was all Glendive. Glasgow mustered only 12 yards of offense and fumbled twice 5 minutes into the game – the second of which Glendive easily converted to a touchdown, a 12-yard run b...
For The Courier Despite the mass amounts of rain that delayed the 16th annual FMDH Foundation Open Golf Tournament, the weather cooperated on Sunday, Sept. 7 – and it was game on. The 24 teams came out to support a great cause and great community. Placiing first was the Fast Farms team of Doug Nistler, Tim Dees, Steve Bell and Dave Wilkowski. Rounding out the top four were Markle's Inc. (Lee Nelson, Kris Simensen, Marc Breigenzer, Carson Buffington) in second. Independence Bank (Sam Mudlin, P...
It was a calm and beautiful sunny morning in Fort Peck. Yet, many adults and youth arrived with doubt. When it was over, they left as confident and inspired triathletes. The first annual Under The Dam Triathlon took place at 8 a.m. sharp on Sunday, Sept. 7. Twenty-five adults and 9 youth participants gathered at the first Dredge Cut. Air temperature was about 50 degrees, and the water looked cold. Trepidation was visible on many faces. There was Marj Markle with bum knees and a body that she...
The Glasgow Scotties XC runners are cutting their times with passion. Coach K loves it. “We've just had a really good practice,” coach Rod Karst told The Courier on Tuesday. “They're practicing with as much intensity as I've had with a team.” At the Billings Invitational last Friday, six of eight Scottie boys ran faster over the 3 miles than they did at the Poplar invite the week earlier. Gabe Hallock was the big time cruncher, dropping 65 seconds from 19:00 to 17:55 to clock fastest for GHS. Morgan Guttenberg improved most among girls,...
Youth from across Montana will come to Glasgow to compete in high school rodeo events at the Valley County fairgrounds at 9 a.m. Sept. 20 and 21. This rodeo will have a YRA and a junior high rodeo that run with it, and this year the high school rodeo will have a reining completion. In addition, if you are a youth up to age 9, a “peewee” or a 10-year-old to eighth-grade “junior,” you could enter this rodeo as a hometown rodeo without purchasing a YRA membership. The goal behind this is to get youth interested in the sport of rodeo. For more de...
Ready or not, here it comes. Zero-week, first game, a non-conference matchup that counts toward overall standing – Scotties head coach Greg Liebelt and his staff were anxious to see what their 2014 team could do. With only 11 days of practice, the Aug. 30 game in Colstrip was an opportunity for the team to evaluate its strengths and weaknesses. Can this team repeat the performance of the 2013 squad that went deep into the playoffs? Glasgow took a good first step, beating the Colts, 14-7. B...
Scottie XC Nation has come to expect running excellence, and Week 1 of the 2014 season at the Poplar Invitational last Saturday showed that more could be in store. The four-time defending state champion GHS girls finished where you would expect. First. The boys also impressed. Although final team results weren't yet available Tuesday, Scottie cross country coach Rod Karst told The Courier that his boys well might have finished second to the strong Culbertson crew. In individual competition, Glasgow senior Amanda Wolff was best. She outpaced...
Glasgow's new-look 2014 Scottie spikers head to this weekend's Choteau Invitational with valuable experience gained at their season debut in the Choteau tourney. Coach Lori Dailey welcomes it. Her volleyball team is growing. “If you're a stat person, the numbers from Choteau don't tell a very favorable story,” Dailey told The Courier. “If, however, you look at the human side of things, you'll see that a very young and inexperienced Scottie volleyball team took to the court at an extremely competitive Choteau tournament and learned some criti...
The younger version of the Saco-Hinsdale Wildfire made their appearance at the Malta Invitational last weekend and eventually lost out in bracket play to TriCity. They did take out Poplar along the way, winning the first of two games 25-19 and 25-22 in a three-game match. The other local team, Nashua, lost to Grass Range in the first round. It was the only victory for Saco-Hinsdale that day as they lost to every other opponent they played. "Those first four games in pool play were a little...

The school boards from Saco, Hinsdale and Whitewater met last Wednesday at Saco to discuss the upcoming girls basketball season. Saco and Whitewater are in the final year of a three year co-op contract and Hinsdale is beginning a drought of players with only four of their seven high school girls wanting to participate in basketball. Hinsdale came hat-in-hand to request a change so that at least three of their girls could join with Saco's girls and play with the co-op. Unfortunately for Hinsdale, there were only two interested people from that...
Rain, Rain, would not go away, causing the FMDH Foundation to postpone its annual golf tournament and major fundraising event. The date for this year's tournament has been rescheduled for Sunday, Sept. 7, at Sunnyside Golf and Country Club in Glasgow, Montana. "We hope you will still join with the foundation to make this year's tournament another tournament to remember," foundation director Mary Kate Tihista said. "Please contact the foundation office at 228-3614 for any changes to your team...

Ready for some football? Football pickin'? The Courier's 47th annual football contest – or what's known as the 47th annual – kicks off this week on Page 6B. Along the way in contest history, some bad math occurred. The picture you see with this article shows the debut contest on Sept. 6, 1966 – 48 years ago. However, the contest was on the disabled list and inactive during the 2009 season – so 47th will have to do. The contest is again a fixture on Courierland's fall sports scene, a weekly...
Cordell Younkin shows his hog around the ring while judge Levi Keyes oversees him. Younkin's hog was a little short in weight, at 179 pounds. The hog was shown in the feeder class, and the judges mentioned that it had plenty of potential for improvement. The hog did take the champion honor for the feeder class, and Younkin took the pig home....
