  • I Remember Ed Boos; I Always Will

    Dean Johnson, For The Courier|Nov 12, 2014

I recently received a Glasgow Courier on my front step here in Gig Harbor, Wash., and was puzzled as to why I received it. I then remembered I went online a few weeks ago to look for an obit on an old neighbor and friend and I had to complete some information online to get a complimentary view. I was told this morning when I called The Courier to make sure I did not subscribe, that when someone signs up for the trial they are also sent a complimentary paper which I enjoyed reading. I then told...

  • Volleyball Scotties Please Coach In Defeat

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Nov 12, 2014

No. 4 tries harder. The Glasgow Scotties, the fourth and final team coming out of 2B in last week's Class B Northern Divisional Tournament, proved to be most competitive against eventual champion Choteau and then old rival Plentywood. The Scotties lost to both and were done, but they impressed their coach, Lori Dailey, in how they did it – with “heart and hustle.” The Scotties went down fighting. “We were proud of our determination in the Choteau match, not bowing to a very talented, very tall, very well-coached team that ended up winning...

  • Divisionals Achieved

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Nov 5, 2014

When the volleyball Scotties qualified for the Class B Northern Divisional Tournament, it was a goal achieved for the young squad. But once they get there, tourney host and favorite Choteau awaits in the opener Thursday morning. That's a tough reward. "Choteau presents a tremendous challenge, and I hope it's one we don't back down from," coach Lori Dailey told The Courier. "Even if a win isn't in the cards this first round, I'm still looking for my team to battle cohesively." Dailey said she...

  • Here They Go Again

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Nov 5, 2014

Glasgow-Conrad, the sequel, brings more, more, more to you than did the first MaxPreps Top 10 clash two weeks ago between the Scotties and Cowboys. More is at stake. The winner in Saturday's 1 p.m. state quarterfinal game at Scottie Field advances in the Class B Championship Series. The loser calls it year. More intensity is expected. Conrad wants revenge. Glasgow wants to prove it's the better team again. The foes battled closely for three quarters in the regular season finale before GHS...

  • Phillips Hot To Trot At Turkey Fun Run

    The Courier|Nov 5, 2014

Tim Phillips, head coach of the GHS track team and Glasgow's junior high cross country team, was a good role model Saturday for his student-athletes. He won the 23rd annual Turkey Trot, a 1.5-mile fun run that supports the Glasgow Rec Department and Valley County Food Bank, in a time of 8:39. That was 6 seconds ahead of runner-up Emilee Morehouse. More than 100 folks participated in the trot, which started and finished at the Glasgow Civic Center. Here are the results: 1. Tim Phillips – male, a...

  • Porkies Representing County At Divisionals

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Nov 5, 2014

The Lady Porcupines of Nashua, Valley County's sole survivor in Class C volleyball, take a short drive on the team bus to Glasgow tomorrow for their opener in the Eastern C Divisional Tournament against 1C runner-up Richey-Lambert Fusion squad. The Porkies advanced on the power of two 3-0 match wins in the District 3C tourney over rival Saco-Hinsdale, the host school. The other 3C entry at Divisional is Scobey, which topped Nashua for the district title. Porcupines coach Shersteen Cline sees a bit of Scobey in Richey-Lambert. That means a chall...

GHS coach Lori Dailey told The Courier that the Scotties' time off has given them "a nice buffer to fine-tune their skills." Glasgow finished 6-4 in 2B after beating Harlem 25-15,...

  • Scotties Ranked No. 1 In State

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Oct 15, 2014

BY JIM ORR THE COURIER A turnover, bad break or penalty could end this amazing possibility in a flash, but here it is: If MaxPreps' top-ranked Montana Class B Scotties shut out visiting Plentywood on Friday, they'll have shut out all of Northern 2B for the season. First came Harlem. Then Malta and Wolf Point. None scored against the Big Dawg D. Now Plentywood, 0-5, gets its shot at 7-0 Glasgow. "I don't recall a season when this has happened," GHS coach Greg Liebelt told The Courier. At this...

  • Glasgow Girls Dig The Football

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Oct 15, 2014

And the winner is ... The Glasgow Scotties girls fall sports teams. None of the girls were injured in Monday night's annual Powder Puff football game before a decent crowd at Scottie Field. "Lots of current fall athletes were on the field for both teams," GHS activities director Brenner Flaten, who walked the sidelines overseeing play, told The Courier. Doing battle with plenty of emotion and some hard hitting were two teams not on the Scottie fall sports schedule: the Booty and the Beast in...

  • Glasgow Volleyball Stays On Growth Path

    For The Courier|Oct 15, 2014

Last Thursday, the Scottie volleyball teams came home with solid wins at all three levels vs. the Wolf Point Wolves. In fact, all three Glasgow teams won in three games straight. More success came Saturday at Poplar. Tuesday proved to be more challenging as the varsity fell in four games at Malta, but there's an opportunity to bounce back tonight – Senior Night – against visiting Plentywood. Proud GHS coach Lori Dailey told The Courier that the statistics against Wolf Point show that many Scotties had good games, but what they don't cap...

It's come down to this for hard-running Glasgow XC. The inaugural Plentywood invite debuts on Saturday. The state Class B cross country meet closes the season a week later on Oct. 25. The Scottie girls and boys continued their quest for Big Sky glory last weekend with a bunch of firsts and seconds in the invitational at Sidney Country Club. For the boys, the Scotties placed second and so did sophomore Gabe Hallock in 17:41, extending his recent string of fastest individual times for GHS. Dawson...

  • Scotties Smother Malta, 35-0

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Oct 8, 2014

It can get better than this – as in winning the Montana Class B championship – but this one tastes sweet for the football Scotties. The 6-0 squad shut out Malta on Saturday, 35-0, its widest margin of victory in the storied rivalry since 48-0 in 1975. This Friday's 2B game at 2-4 Wolf Point looks like a tuneup for the postseason. "Our goal all along has been getting to the state championship," Scotties coach Greg Liebelt told The Courier. "We believe that we have the personnel where we can be...

  • The NFL-Plentywood Connection

    Jim Orr, The SpORRts RepORRtt|Oct 8, 2014

Dan Carpenter, the Griz kicking great who married a Plentywood farm girl, has converted his attempt to become one of the NFL's best kickers. They call him "money" these days because of his reliability to make field goals in Buffalo, where he's a big reason why the AFC East first place Bills have a 3-2 winning record. Carpenter was named the NFL Special Teams Player of the Week after the season opener, having kicked a 50-yarder and the game-winning field goal in overtime at Chicago. This past...

  • GHS Volleyball 3-2 In Conference Matches After Splitting Two

    For The Courier|Oct 8, 2014

The GHS varsity volleyball team has a record of 3-2 after conference matches with Harlem and Plentywood. Solid passing led to steady play for the girls on Thursday as they defeated the Harlem Wildcats in three games straight. Amy Breigenzer rejoined the lineup for the first time after an ankle fracture sidelined her on August 26. "Amy has been so patient during the healing process," coach Lori Dailey told The Courier. "How rewarding for her to play in front of a good home crowd after such a...

  • Glasgow XC: Girls Take First, Boys Overtake Harlem

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Oct 8, 2014

Glasgow XC hits the Sidney Invitational on Saturday after hitting a speed bump last week in Havre. A week after the Scotties blazed through flat Fort Peck Kiwanis Park course in their own invitational, their times were bound to rise at the somewhat hilly MSU-Northern course. And they did. But the girls placed first as team, 10 points ahead of Fergus and way ahead of everyone else. Josie Braaten was the fastest girl in the field at 19:28. The boys placed fifth among teams, overtaking respected sixth-place Class B rival Harlem, which edged...
