  • Scottie Boys Bring Home Third Place

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 27, 2015

Eight-hundred and thirty-eight miles, 22 athletes, seven coaches, two managers and one Scottie cruiser. That's just part of what it takes to attend a state track meet. Coach Tim Phillips and his crew of coaches and athletes made the trek across the state to Kalispell to do just that. They were followed sporadically by a caravan of family and friends hoping to cheer the Scotties on to victory. Former coach John Labonty spent both days at the meet as well – to the delight of most every athlete o...

  • Scottie Softball Exits State Tournament Early

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|May 27, 2015

It wasn't the outcome they had hoped for. The team that has built success from powerful bats found itself outhit by their Western Montana opponents. Adding a few costly errors into the mix, the Glasgow softball team exited the state tournament in Belgrade on day two. The Scotties dropped the first game to Florence-Carlton 11-1. They stayed alive by narrowly beating Eastern 4-seed Shepherd 8-6 in an extra inning, then lost out of the double elimination to the eventual second-place team, Ronan,...

  • Reds 2, Richland County Patriots 3

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|May 27, 2015

The Glasgow Reds baseball team lost a friendly pickup game in Sidney on May 20. The Reds got on board first with one run at the top of the second inning. Sidney answered back with one in the fourth and two in the fifth inning. Reds scored again in the sixth, but did not mount enough offense to turn the tide. Reds Ryan Padden pitched four innings and struck out two, while Jake Kolstad pitched two innings, striking out one. They walked four and yielded only two hits. However, with one error made b...

  • Catfish Classic Tournament Returns for 16th Year In Glasgow

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|May 27, 2015

Not only a local favorite fishing tournament, but Brenner Flaten, who has helped run and organize the event every year for 16 years, says it’s one of the top five fishing events in the nation. The tournament is so popular that Flaten said the tournament for this year was full 358 days before the tournament began. Coming to Glasgow for the weekend will be 80 two-person teams who will have eight hours to catch the biggest catfish they can grab in the local Milk River. The Milk River Catfish Classic is one of four circuit tournaments under the M...

  • FWP Seeking Public Comment on Changes in Fishing Regulation

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|May 27, 2015

The Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) have been making their rounds along the Hi-Line looking for public comment and questions on a few regulation changes. Comments need to be in by May 31. They made their stop in Glasgow last week and explained that there weren’t a lot of big changes in the works, and that has made for a fairly quiet public commenting period this year. Changes in our area, Region 6, include specifying more clearly the waters where use of live bait is allowed, prohibiting bow fishing for shortnose gar in the Fort Peck D...

  • Class C Meet Qualifies Athletes To State

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 20, 2015

Class C coaches wear many hats. They are coaches first, but also play the role of parent, counselor, referee, physical therapist, and more. Sometimes they have to fake it 'til they make it. There was a little of that this season for Ryen Falkenstern, of Nashua, and Lisa Beus, of Hinsdale. Falkenstern initially was going to be the track and field coach just for the lady Porcupines. He stepped up for the boys' team when things didn't work out with the prospective coach for them. This is Beus'...

  • Scottie Softball Sets The Bar, Heading To State

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|May 20, 2015

"It'd be nice to be in the championship," said Sadie Sukut, one of the two senior leaders on the Glasgow softball team. "Yeah. A trophy would be sweet," said Autumn Hopkins, the other senior. The 2015 team started out as a young and inexperienced team. But over the course of the season, they have battled, rallied, set goals and repeatedly reached them. They hold an impressive 17-2 record going into state this weekend. Head coach Mark Falcon wants his squad to "finish strong". After beating Cut...

  • Even Through the Wind and Rain, Scotties Go to State

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 20, 2015

We raise 'em right in Montana. There's no doubt in my mind. It was truly a miserable day at the North/East B divisional track meet on Saturday, but from the athletes to the volunteers, not a single "whine" was heard. If anyone was whining, it all stopped when the Glasgow boys and girls swept the meet and brought home the titles of divisional champs (the first time in school history that both boys and girls claimed the divisional title two years in a row). It was all smiles and hugs after that....

  • If You Care, Leave Them There

    MT FWP|May 20, 2015

Every spring Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks issues a message to Montanans to leave new born fawns, birds, and other infant wildlife where people find them. "If you care, leave them there," said Ron Aasheim, spokesman for Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks in Helena. Aasheim said that most birds, for instance, learn to fly from the ground up, and not from the nest. "Whether you find a fawn or fledgling bird under a tree in a neighbor's yard or bunny under a bush it's important to know that wild...

  • State Golfers Don't Place At The Top, But Show A Personal Best

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 20, 2015

Scottie girl golfers gained some wonderful experience last week at the state golf meet – including the part when they had 50-plus people watching them on the first tee box. At least that’s what Coach Dave Riggin thought was wonderful. “They’ve never experienced that before. The whole thing was great for the returning girls to experience,” said Riggin. “With two brand new girls and a second year golfer on the team this year, we will still have a young team next season.” As for their overall performance, the Scottie girls placed eleventh out...

  • Track Takes District By Storm

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 13, 2015

They showed up, they gave it their all and they walked away with respect and titles. Glasgow boys and girls dominated at the district track meet held in Wolf Point on Saturday, with both teams bringing home the title of district champs. Forty-three new personal records were accomplished, and the list of state qualifiers grew by three – girls 1600-meter relay, Chase Fossum in the 400-meter, and Luke Breigenzer in the 110-meter hurdles. The boys claimed the top spot - beating Wolf Point by 122 p...

  • Reds Pick Up First Win, Moms Treated To Pitching Dual

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|May 13, 2015

It's the season of sunflower seeds, hot dogs, and sunscreen. The Glasgow Reds traveled to Havre on Sunday, May 10 to open their season with some Mother's Day baseball. After a small ceremony to celebrate the mothers in attendance, the double header showcased the younger players from both sides in the first game. Reds B Kasey Seyfert started on the mound, followed by Brayden Jackson and the closer, Hunter Losleben. There was good rotation of players, with the whole roster getting some game time....

  • Scotties Softball Enters Divisional as Strong Second Seed

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|May 13, 2015

The Glasgow Scottie softball team knows how to battle. Coming from behind to beat two tough opponents last weekend-including going to the extra inning-has the girls feeling confident as they enter the Eastern B-C Divisional Tournament in Conrad, May 15-16. "These girls dig deep and work hard. Six times this season we've had comeback wins. Our team gets along well, they stay positive and cheer each other on. They work really hard and I am proud of these girls," said head coach Mark Falcon. At the...

  • Box Elder Creek Sampling Finished

    Marc Kloker, For The Courier|May 13, 2015

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and community volunteers recently sampled Box Elder Creek Reservoir (Bolster Dam) on the outskirts of Plentywood as part of their continued commitment to the fisheries in the Plentywood area. The sampling identified many interesting findings, and a few concerns as well. Region 6 fisheries biologists Tyler Haddix and Dave Fuller met with Plentywood community volunteers on the evening of April 14. Together, they set gill and trap nets, and also used electrofishing te...

  • Top Ten Show First Class Sportsmanship

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 6, 2015

It was a beautiful evening for a track meet. On Tuesday, Glasgow hosted the annual "Top Ten" track meet. The top ten meet was started in 1983 by Bob Farrell, Mark Yoakam and Norm Girard. Athletes qualify just by being in the top ten in their events based on the overall results in Eastern Montana. Tim Phillips, head coach for the Glasgow Scotties, explained that they want the kids to do their individual best so they don't typically have them compete in everything they qualify for. This means...

  • Softball Team Headed To Conference 4-1

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|May 6, 2015

The Glasgow softball team put two more Ws under its belt last week and is entering the Glasgow Softball Slam this weekend as the No. 2 team to beat, just one game back behind No. 1 Conrad. The first win came from defeating Glendive on the Red Devils' diamond, 9-6, on Tuesday, April 28. Jumping up to a 4-0 lead in the second innings, the Scottie girls maintained a 3-run lead for the rest of the game to earn this non-conference win. The Scotties are 2-0 against class A Glendive this season. Of...

  • Wolf Point Track Meet Primes Athletes For District Next Weekend

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 6, 2015

The second track meet of the week for the Scotties was held in Wolf Point Saturday. Coach Tim Phillips decided not to run the kids in all events, keeping the meet low-key for the day, but it was a good time for the team to gain some experience on the track at Wolf Point because the District meet will be held there on Saturday – one week later. There was a computer system malfunction, so no results could be counted for state qualifying times – although there were a number of personal bests thr...

  • Turning Heads, Reds Start Swinging

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|May 6, 2015

Baseball diamonds come alive in the spring time in Glasgow. The Cal Ripken League opened their season in late April; the softball girls traded winter caps for helmets as soon as the ground thawed. A rare warm and dry spring has primed the area youth for another promising summer sports season in Northeast Montana.  The Glasgow Reds baseball players started their practice on April 1. Spring training comes with a large amount of soil, grass, water and facility works-by volunteers-to get the f...

  • Girls Golfers Headed To State May 12

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 6, 2015

Scottie girl golfers achieved their goal at the divisional meet held in Wolf Point on Monday. “Our goal was not to be the fourth place team, so we achieved that,” Coach Dave Riggin said. All five girls on the team qualified for state - Lauren Runningen with a score of 149, Heidi Moon with 139, Amy Nelson with 122, Tamrah Pewitt with 108, and Makkell Baillargeon leading the girls with a score of 103. The team score for the girls was 472 – out-scoring Cut Bank by 16 points to secure third place and some hardware for GHS. Riggin explained that...

  • Scotties Take The Top This Weekend

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Apr 29, 2015

Glasgow boys and girls both came out on top in the team rankings at the Hinsdale Invitational track meet held at the Glasgow High School track this past weekend. The boys earned first place with a total point tally of 156 and the girls with a total of 199.33 points. "We're really proud of the kids. I think overall, we're seeing a ton of competitive athletes from Eastern Montana," Coach Tim Phillips said, reflecting on the day. "There are some really talented athletes from Class C, and it's alway...

  • Golfers Tee Off On Home Turf At Glasgow Invitational

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Apr 29, 2015

In the first invitational of the season the Glasgow Scotties hosted. While the weather held out and minimum winds made it a good day to swing a club. "Normally in Glasgow there's either rain, wind or snow and we were lucky we didn't have any of it," Coach Dave Riggin said. The boys team was able to snag a second place overall for the team with a total score of 413, only losing to Malta, whose score came in at 368. Two players were returning varsity lettermen players. Riggin said that all the...

  • Scotties Suffer First Conference Loss

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|Apr 29, 2015

The Scottie softball team suffered their first conference loss to what many consider the top team in the division, the Conrad Cowgirls. The Cowgirls shut down the Scotties, 2-0, on April 25 at the Columbus Invitational Tournament. But not before the Scotties picked up three conference wins in Columbus, beating Huntley Project Lady Red Devils 10-4, Colstrip 16-8, and narrowly edging the tough Stillwater, 5-4. That brings the Scotties to a 3-1 in conference record, 9-2 overall. Scottie Tyra Johnson was the winning pitcher vs. Huntley Project and...
