  • Scotties Make Devils See Red

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|Sep 10, 2014

It looks like the Scotties have a habit of experiencing a shaky start, then knowing how to get back on track. That was the pattern after Glasgow's second game of the season. The Scotties fought hard and won a come-from-behind victory over the home team Dawson County Red Devils, 29-14, on Sept. 5. The first quarter was all Glendive. Glasgow mustered only 12 yards of offense and fumbled twice 5 minutes into the game – the second of which Glendive easily converted to a touchdown, a 12-yard run b...

The 24 teams came out to support a great cause and great community. Placiing first was the Fast Farms team of Doug Nistler, Tim Dees, Steve Bell and Dave Wilkowski. Rounding out the top four were Markle's Inc. (Lee Nelson, Kris Simensen, Marc Breigenzer, Carson Buffington) in second. Independence Bank (Sam Mudlin, P...

  • Under The Dam Triathlon Goes Over Well; 35 Participate

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|Sep 10, 2014

It was a calm and beautiful sunny morning in Fort Peck. Yet, many adults and youth arrived with doubt. When it was over, they left as confident and inspired triathletes. The first annual Under The Dam Triathlon took place at 8 a.m. sharp on Sunday, Sept. 7. Twenty-five adults and 9 youth participants gathered at the first Dredge Cut. Air temperature was about 50 degrees, and the water looked cold. Trepidation was visible on many faces. There was Marj Markle with bum knees and a body that she...

  • Scottie Time Travelers Speed Up

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Sep 10, 2014

The Glasgow Scotties XC runners are cutting their times with passion. Coach K loves it. “We've just had a really good practice,” coach Rod Karst told The Courier on Tuesday. “They're practicing with as much intensity as I've had with a team.” At the Billings Invitational last Friday, six of eight Scottie boys ran faster over the 3 miles than they did at the Poplar invite the week earlier. Gabe Hallock was the big time cruncher, dropping 65 seconds from 19:00 to 17:55 to clock fastest for GHS. Morgan Guttenberg improved most among girls,...

  • High School Rodeo Sept. 20

    Sep 10, 2014

Youth from across Montana will come to Glasgow to compete in high school rodeo events at the Valley County fairgrounds at 9 a.m. Sept. 20 and 21. This rodeo will have a YRA and a junior high rodeo that run with it, and this year the high school rodeo will have a reining completion. In addition, if you are a youth up to age 9, a “peewee” or a 10-year-old to eighth-grade “junior,” you could enter this rodeo as a hometown rodeo without purchasing a YRA membership. The goal behind this is to get youth interested in the sport of rodeo. For more de...

  • Opener Goes To Football Scotties

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|Sep 3, 2014

Ready or not, here it comes. Zero-week, first game, a non-conference matchup that counts toward overall standing – Scotties head coach Greg Liebelt and his staff were anxious to see what their 2014 team could do. With only 11 days of practice, the Aug. 30 game in Colstrip was an opportunity for the team to evaluate its strengths and weaknesses. Can this team repeat the performance of the 2013 squad that went deep into the playoffs? Glasgow took a good first step, beating the Colts, 14-7. B...

  • Glasgow XC: Girls, Boys Start Well

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Sep 3, 2014

Scottie XC Nation has come to expect running excellence, and Week 1 of the 2014 season at the Poplar Invitational last Saturday showed that more could be in store. The four-time defending state champion GHS girls finished where you would expect. First. The boys also impressed. Although final team results weren't yet available Tuesday, Scottie cross country coach Rod Karst told The Courier that his boys well might have finished second to the strong Culbertson crew. In individual competition, Glasgow senior Amanda Wolff was best. She outpaced...

  • Choteau A Learning Experience For GHS Volleyball

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Sep 3, 2014

Glasgow's new-look 2014 Scottie spikers head to this weekend's Choteau Invitational with valuable experience gained at their season debut in the Choteau tourney. Coach Lori Dailey welcomes it. Her volleyball team is growing. “If you're a stat person, the numbers from Choteau don't tell a very favorable story,” Dailey told The Courier. “If, however, you look at the human side of things, you'll see that a very young and inexperienced Scottie volleyball team took to the court at an extremely competitive Choteau tournament and learned some criti...

  • Wildfire Volleyball: Talent Shows Despite Youth

    Pierre Bibbs, Phillips County News|Sep 3, 2014

The younger version of the Saco-Hinsdale Wildfire made their appearance at the Malta Invitational last weekend and eventually lost out in bracket play to TriCity. They did take out Poplar along the way, winning the first of two games 25-19 and 25-22 in a three-game match. The other local team, Nashua, lost to Grass Range in the first round. It was the only victory for Saco-Hinsdale that day as they lost to every other opponent they played. "Those first four games in pool play were a little...

  • Hinsdale Girls Hoops In Limbo

    Virgil Vaupel, Thanks For Listening|Aug 27, 2014

The school boards from Saco, Hinsdale and Whitewater met last Wednesday at Saco to discuss the upcoming girls basketball season. Saco and Whitewater are in the final year of a three year co-op contract and Hinsdale is beginning a drought of players with only four of their seven high school girls wanting to participate in basketball. Hinsdale came hat-in-hand to request a change so that at least three of their girls could join with Saco's girls and play with the co-op. Unfortunately for Hinsdale, there were only two interested people from that...

  • The Courier Football Contest

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Aug 27, 2014

Ready for some football? Football pickin'? The Courier's 47th annual football contest – or what's known as the 47th annual – kicks off this week on Page 6B. Along the way in contest history, some bad math occurred. The picture you see with this article shows the debut contest on Sept. 6, 1966 – 48 years ago. However, the contest was on the disabled list and inactive during the 2009 season – so 47th will have to do. The contest is again a fixture on Courierland's fall sports scene, a weekly...

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Aug 20, 2014

Organizers of the event said that the conditions for the weekend couldn't have been better. Cars and trucks could be seen lining up on the dam to get a view at the eight sailboats that competed in the local event.
