The Glasgow Reds put in a laudable performance at the Lewistown tournament this weekend with strong hitting and a final loss of 4-3 to the Dickinson Rough Riders for a second place finish. Reds pitcher Keil Krumwiede hit 1-3 during the first game of the series, aiding the team to a 4-1 victory over Great Falls Electrics. Pitcher Kasey Seyfert allowed just two hits, one walk and no earned runs before closer Jason Thibault recorded the save. The second game was a 7-6 victory over the Gallatin Valley Outlaws. Parker Kulczyk hit well for the Reds,...

Julie Burke of the Fort Peck Lake Sailing Club is planning to kick off another great season with the Summer...
The Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder achieved another strong finish at the Malta swim meet this past weekend. After placing third at the first meet of the season in Harlem two weeks ago, they moved up a notch and brought home a second-place trophy. The team doubled in size from last week as 24 swimmers attended the meet. Out of 76 event entries, Glasgow scored top three in 26 of them. The team struggled however, in their usually strong relays, with three out of the seven relays being disqualified....

Although North was only down by one with 4:38 left in the game, South did score a TD and a...
The Glasgow Reds baseball team is home again. They weathered eight games in five days on the road—two in Miles City where the Reds split with the Mavericks, then taking silver in the Buffalo Wild Wings Tournament in Billings. The result: Four wins, two losses and two ties, and an overall 12-8-2 record. Reds head coach Jack Sprague has this to say: “We’re not getting the results that we were expecting at this point in the year but this is a perfect time to evaluate our team. We usually use the Lewistown tournament to gauge where were at for t...

When I saw pictures of the Valley Bank minors team with their trophies, I had flashbacks. It seems like just yesterday my own daughter was playing baseball for Valley Bank and her team was celebrating their first-place win. The Cal Ripken minor league tournament was held this last weekend at Jeff Jurgens Field. Valley Bank eventually won the tournament, but they had to play Hi-Line Ford three times before it was over. They played their first game on Friday against McDonald's and outscored them...
Hunters interested in participating in “game-damage” hunts on private land or possible management seasons this year can register online beginning Monday, June 15, with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. Hunters from this roster may be identified for three types of hunts: game damage, management season and dispersal. The roster is used by FWP to efficiently respond to landowners in the prevention or reduction of damage primarily caused by deer, elk and antelope. Prospective hunters must register online by July 15 at fwp.mt.gov. Click “Hunt Roste...
Montana’s welcoming summer waters annually draw anglers, hikers, wildlife viewers, campers, floaters and boaters into the outdoors because it’s still easy to have a great summer experience on Montana’s rivers. The key is river etiquette, a mix of common sense, courtesy, and respect to minimize one party’s impact on another party’s good time. Here are some examples of basic river etiquette. Respect People’s Space and Privacy—The point at which someone feels crowded is subjective, but every outdoor activity requires space. On the river, mainta...
The Glasgow Reds won their first two home games of the season handily at Bill Connors Field June 3, against the Miles City Mavericks. The score for game 1 was 12-1, with the second game clocking in at 13-2. The stomping was not too much of a surprise to Head Coach Jack Sprague. "They're rebuilding from least season," he explains. "We played well and the scores were a little bit one-sided." Miles City had trouble with numbers, with many players down from what started out this season as a full...
For the sixteenth year in a row, Northeast Montana was treated to a great show. The Milk River Catfish Classic took place over the weekend in Glasgow, Montana. Fishermen came from near and far to try and climb to the top of the Cat Classic mountain and take home the famed "traveling trophy." The Cat Classic never seems to disappoint and this year 67 teams weighed in fish. Stable water conditions gave way to many limits of five catfish throughout the tournament field. Bigger fish did prove...
The secrets of local fishing here in Valley County are a mystery to me. Thankfully, local sportsman Gene Moore from Lakeridge Motel and Tackle and Marc Kloker from the FWP have teamed-up to provide me with a balanced (if occasionally oppositional) short course on the ins-and-outs of dredge cuts, tempting bait, and local fishing hotspots. This is the first installment. Enjoy! To begin with, I asked Gene for a little gossip and he delivered the dirt along with a touch of the obvious thrown in for good measure. The typical question for customers...
A popular Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Region 6 program that allows children and their families to check out free fishing rods and tackle is in full swing again this year. Just in time for summer fishing, FWP staff is in the process of restocking the 49 (and counting) different location sites across Montana's Hi-Line. The "Kids to Fish" program lets youngsters check out fishing rods, reels and basic tackle, such as hooks, bobbers and sinkers. Typically, eight rods are at each location, and a...
The small community of Harlem, Mont. has an oasis right in the middle of town, the city pool. This past weekend, they hosted the first swim meet of the season and the Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder Swim Team was there to compete. Overall, the Thunder had a strong showing as 13 swimmers competed in a total of 43 events, which included three relays. The first meet is typically low-key and this one was no exception. There were several events in different age groups that had only one swimmer competing....
It takes a village to raise a child. Or, in this case, it takes a community to produce outstanding athletes. Sponsored by the Scottie Booster Club, the GHS All-Sports Athletic Banquet was held Tuesday, May 26th in the St Raphael's Gymnasium. The banquet was resurrected by current GHS activity director, Brenner Flaten, who hosted the event. Keynote speaker was Jeff Graham from Belt, Mont. Graham teaches middle school and high school history, weight training, and K-12 P.E. He is the head coach for...
Long-time Glasgow High School softball head coach Mark Falcon announced his retirement at the Scottie Booster Club All-Sports Banquet last Tuesday, May 26. Falcon became the Scottie softball head coach in 2004, with Arlene Archambeault as his assistant coach. Although assistant coaches have come and gone, Falcon has remained at the helm until the close of the 2015 season. Scottie softball team established its inaugural season in 2003. It won the first ever home game on April 8 with a 3-2...
In the opening round of conference games in Billings on May 30-31, the Glasgow Reds found themselves duplicating results with two different teams. They followed with big wins in round two. The hometown fans shall look forward to the Reds' first home game, scheduled for Wednesday, June 3 at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. The...

Eight-hundred and thirty-eight miles, 22 athletes, seven coaches, two managers and one Scottie cruiser. That's just part of what it takes to attend a state track meet. Coach Tim Phillips and his crew of coaches and athletes made the trek across the state to Kalispell to do just that. They were followed sporadically by a caravan of family and friends hoping to cheer the Scotties on to victory. Former coach John Labonty spent both days at the meet as well – to the delight of most every athlete o...
It wasn't the outcome they had hoped for. The team that has built success from powerful bats found itself outhit by their Western Montana opponents. Adding a few costly errors into the mix, the Glasgow softball team exited the state tournament in Belgrade on day two. The Scotties dropped the first game to Florence-Carlton 11-1. They stayed alive by narrowly beating Eastern 4-seed Shepherd 8-6 in an extra inning, then lost out of the double elimination to the eventual second-place team, Ronan,...
The Glasgow Reds baseball team lost a friendly pickup game in Sidney on May 20. The Reds got on board first with one run at the top of the second inning. Sidney answered back with one in the fourth and two in the fifth inning. Reds scored again in the sixth, but did not mount enough offense to turn the tide. Reds Ryan Padden pitched four innings and struck out two, while Jake Kolstad pitched two innings, striking out one. They walked four and yielded only two hits. However, with one error made b...
Not only a local favorite fishing tournament, but Brenner Flaten, who has helped run and organize the event every year for 16 years, says it’s one of the top five fishing events in the nation. The tournament is so popular that Flaten said the tournament for this year was full 358 days before the tournament began. Coming to Glasgow for the weekend will be 80 two-person teams who will have eight hours to catch the biggest catfish they can grab in the local Milk River. The Milk River Catfish Classic is one of four circuit tournaments under the M...
The Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) have been making their rounds along the Hi-Line looking for public comment and questions on a few regulation changes. Comments need to be in by May 31. They made their stop in Glasgow last week and explained that there weren’t a lot of big changes in the works, and that has made for a fairly quiet public commenting period this year. Changes in our area, Region 6, include specifying more clearly the waters where use of live bait is allowed, prohibiting bow fishing for shortnose gar in the Fort Peck D...
Class C coaches wear many hats. They are coaches first, but also play the role of parent, counselor, referee, physical therapist, and more. Sometimes they have to fake it 'til they make it. There was a little of that this season for Ryen Falkenstern, of Nashua, and Lisa Beus, of Hinsdale. Falkenstern initially was going to be the track and field coach just for the lady Porcupines. He stepped up for the boys' team when things didn't work out with the prospective coach for them. This is Beus'...
