  • 47th Annual Governor's Cup to Kick off Thursday

    Patrick Burr, The Courier|Jul 8, 2015

For one weekend each July, the fishing world stops to cast a line into the deep-teal bliss of Fort Peck Lake. On July 10-11, the Governor's Cup Walleye Tournament will reaffirm its indelible stamp on Hi-Line summer culture, as it has for the past 46 years. "We used to call it 'Walleye Week'," says Lisa Olk, the executive director of Glasgow's Chamber of Commerce, when asked whether fireworks or fishing takes precedence as the town's preeminent July tradition. "So definitely the Gov' Cup," she be...

  • Reds Climb Legion Standings After Weekend Sweep

    Patrick Burr, The Courier|Jul 8, 2015

Buoyed by a week of hard work following their Terry Jablonski Tournament championship, the Reds took four games out of four Thursday and Friday night, two apiece from league rival Lewistown Redbirds and the Richland County Patriots. Both of the games versus the latter ended with the 10-run mercy rule's taking effect after five innings. "We knew coming in we had to get [wins]," said coach Jack Sprague. Lewistown ambled into Sullivan Park seeking to avenge last Sunday's title game loss and cushion...

  • Lewistown Hosts Fourth of July Meet

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jul 8, 2015

Despite having one of the largest number of registered swimmers in their division, the Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder had the least number of swimmers participate in the Lewistown meet held this past weekend. Senior swimmer Tony Kaiser was the only male swimmer from Glasgow to attend. Also attending from Glasgow were senior swimmer Jordan Kulczyk, intermediate swimmer Katie Kaiser, and junior swimmer Raelee Dowden. Although they had a low number of swimmers, the Thunder achieved some fairly...

  • Glasgow Reds Take Terry Jablonski Tournament Title

    Patrick Burr, The Courier|Jul 1, 2015

The Glasgow Reds returned home from Dickinson, ND, site of the weekend's Terry Jablonski Tournament, with a quartet of victories to their name and a trophy to show for their efforts; Saturday's 15-5 drubbing at the hands of the Dickinson Roughriders, the tournament's host, was bookended by Thursday and Friday's respective wins over Spearfish, S.D., and Regina, Sask. and a sweep of Sunday's twinbill over Billings and Lewistown to seal the title. At last weekend's Lewistown tournament, the Reds fe...

  • Glasgow Rodeo Committee Hosts Annual Twist of Lime Team Roping

    Patrick Burr, The Courier|Jul 1, 2015

The heat of Saturday's noontime sun at Glasgow's Cherry Creek Roping Arena was tempered by a wavering summer breeze, chasing from the conscious mind any stray musings of one's ability to fry an egg on a bald spot while setting the scene for a day in lassoing paradise. Each individual participant competed on three discrete teams of two ropers; one partner was selected at the entrant's discretion, while the remaining two were assigned by a name-in-the-hat drawing. In total, 118 pairs entered the...

  • Thunder Struggle in the Heat at Glendive

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jul 1, 2015

Three hundred and two miles, 91 degrees, 47 events, 26 swimmers, two days. That all adds up to fourth place and two high point winners for the Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder. The fourth swim meet of the season was held in Glendive this past weekend. Overall, the team struggled with the heat, but many swimmers still managed to improve their times in individual events. The Thunder also managed to claim high point status in two age groups. Katie Kaiser earned high point in the 13–14 year old girls with t...

From DNRC The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) and firefighters across Montana want to help you celebrate Independence Day with wildfire safety in mind. As we draw near the Fourth of July, many of us celebrate with family and friends by enjoying campfires, barbecues and firework displays. While these activities encourage fun times and great memories, it is important to understand they may also pose serious threats and risks. The team had definite strong and consistent improvement from each swimmer in almost every event, and some strong performances from swimmers who competed for the first time this past weekend. "It's rewarding to see the kids improve so much each week," said head...

The result: Four wins, two losses and two ties, and an overall 12-8-2 record. Reds head coach Jack Sprague has this to say: “We’re not getting the results that we were expecting at this point in the year but this is a perfect time to evaluate our team. • Valley Bank Wins Minors Tourney

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jun 17, 2015

When I saw pictures of the Valley Bank minors team with their trophies, I had flashbacks. It seems like just yesterday my own daughter was playing baseball for Valley Bank and her team was celebrating their first-place win. The Cal Ripken minor league tournament was held this last weekend at Jeff Jurgens Field. Valley Bank eventually won the tournament, but they had to play Hi-Line Ford three times before it was over. They played their first game on Friday against McDonald's and outscored them...

  • Manners Matter: How To Share The River

    FWP|Jun 17, 2015

Montana’s welcoming summer waters annually draw anglers, hikers, wildlife viewers, campers, floaters and boaters into the outdoors because it’s still easy to have a great summer experience on Montana’s rivers. The key is river etiquette, a mix of common sense, courtesy, and respect to minimize one party’s impact on another party’s good time. Here are some examples of basic river etiquette. Respect People’s Space and Privacy—The point at which someone feels crowded is subjective, but every outdoor activity requires space. On the river, mainta...

  • Reds Win Five and Lose One At Home and Away

    James Walling, The Courier|Jun 10, 2015

The Glasgow Reds won their first two home games of the season handily at Bill Connors Field June 3, against the Miles City Mavericks. The score for game 1 was 12-1, with the second game clocking in at 13-2. The stomping was not too much of a surprise to Head Coach Jack Sprague. "They're rebuilding from least season," he explains. "We played well and the scores were a little bit one-sided." Miles City had trouble with numbers, with many players down from what started out this season as a full...

  • George Brothers Come Out On Top In The 2015 Milk River Catfish Classic

    For The Courier|Jun 10, 2015

For the sixteenth year in a row, Northeast Montana was treated to a great show. The Milk River Catfish Classic took place over the weekend in Glasgow, Montana. Fishermen came from near and far to try and climb to the top of the Cat Classic mountain and take home the famed "traveling trophy." The Cat Classic never seems to disappoint and this year 67 teams weighed in fish. Stable water conditions gave way to many limits of five catfish throughout the tournament field. Bigger fish did prove...

  • Wall-Eyed: Idle Chatter and Received Wisdom on Area Fishing

    James Walling, The Courier|Jun 10, 2015

The secrets of local fishing here in Valley County are a mystery to me. Thankfully, local sportsman Gene Moore from Lakeridge Motel and Tackle and Marc Kloker from the FWP have teamed-up to provide me with a balanced (if occasionally oppositional) short course on the ins-and-outs of dredge cuts, tempting bait, and local fishing hotspots. This is the first installment. Enjoy! To begin with, I asked Gene for a little gossip and he delivered the dirt along with a touch of the obvious thrown in for good measure. The typical question for customers...

    Marc Kloker, For The Courier|Jun 10, 2015

Just in time for summer fishing, FWP staff is in the process of restocking the 49 (and counting) different location sites across Montana's Hi-Line. The "Kids to Fish" program lets youngsters check out fishing rods, reels and basic tackle, such as hooks, bobbers and sinkers. Typically, eight rods are at each location, and a...
