  • Competing Against The Best

    Quinn Robinson, The Courier|May 7, 2014

It's the meet everyone has been gearing up for. The Northeastern Top 10 Meet was held in Glasgow on Tuesday that showcased the best track and field athletes in the area. The Scotties themselves had plenty of representation in the meet and as has come expected with Glasgow track and field, fans of the team didn't leave disappointed. In the girls track events, Megan Dailey took third place in the 100-meter race with a time of 13.13. Some people might think that number is unlucky, but for Dailey it...

  • Hinsdale Track On a Roll

    Virgil Vaupel, Courier Correspondent|May 7, 2014

It was a brisk day for a track meet last Saturday at Scottie Field made a tad bit worse with an 8 a.m. starting time and a light breeze from the north but the boys and girls from Hinsdale were on a mission. The weather was furthermost from their thoughts this day when Hinsdale honors the memory of Hinsdale’s number one sports fan with this memorial track and field meet. The boys put quite a few on the podium and with just one first place finish the Raiders took second place behind Fairview. Pablo Pascual’s 12.19 was good enough to take two poi...

  • With Harvest Season Over, Paddlefish Season Begins May 15

    Region 6 FWP|May 7, 2014

Paddlefish season begins May 15 on the Yellowstone River below the mouth of the Bighorn River and Missouri River downstream of Fort Peck Dam. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks biologists continue to monitor these unique populations and take a conservative approach to managing these long-lived fishes. “Opening day this year falls on a catch and release only day so anglers need to be aware that if they intend to fish on opening day, Intake Fishing Access Site is their only option that day”, said Mike Backes, Region 7 Fisheries Manager. All paddlefis...

  • Thrown For A Curve

    Quinn Robinson, The Courier|May 7, 2014

I have been thinking about starting a column for a while now. It would never hurt to practice writing them, especially when you are in your first job, and not officially out of college. That comes on May 17. High Five! This column won't be your typical sports column, while we will discuss sports, there will also be pieces inserted in here from my experiences around Glasgow. Names will be left out of course, maybe. Now that the introductions of the premise of this column have been touched on, sit back, relax, and enjoy. • What Glasgow track a...

It was a good test and for the most part, the kids stepped up and competed." Girls distance running has...

    FWP Region 6|Apr 30, 2014

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will host a series of nine public meetings in May to review and discuss recent recommendations from an advisory council tasked with adjusting Montana’s hunting and fishing licenses and fees. The Fish & Wildlife Licensing and Funding Advisory Council spent the past eight months examining FWP’s current license system and funding cycle for fish and wildlife management. That work resulted in recent recommendations to FWP Director Jeff Hagener that would provide an additional $6.25 million a year to stave off deep bud...

  • Scottie Softball On A Roll

    Quinn Robinson, The Courier|Apr 23, 2014

The Glasgow softball team continues to mow through their opponents as they are now 5-0 on the season. Scotties head coach Mark Falcon acknowledged the good start his team is on, but said they’re far from where he wants them to be. “We started off pretty well,” Falcon said. “We know what we need to work on. We haven’t had time to have defensive practices yet, but we need to be moving a little more on our bunting and fly balls.” Falcon said that the Scotties are hitting just fine at the plate although he would like to see his team executing m...

  • Flying Through The Air

    Quinn Robinson, The Courier|Apr 23, 2014

The Glasgow Scotties track and field team held an impromptu meet at Glasgow on Monday after their previously scheduled meet at Cut Bank was canceled due to snow. The Scotties are picking up steam as they get deeper into the track and field season. John LaBonty, the Scotties head coach, said that an event like the one held on Monday was still a process of putting the right athletes in the right events. "We need to take kids and throw them in different events so we can see some things," LaBonty...

  • Hinsdale's Lacock, Pascal Owning The Track

    Virgil Vaupel, Courier Correspondent|Apr 23, 2014

Hinsdale’s Lacock and Pascual Still Going Strong Pablo Pascual of Hinsdale and Spain keeps pushing toward a slot at the state track and field meet which will be held in Great Falls May 30 and 31. That’s the closest state tournament or meet Hinsdale has had in at least 10 years. Only 250 miles so be there or be square. This meet was held in Glasgow last Monday. I thought the four day school week was supposed to take care of the weekday meets and games. But I guess because there was no school anyway there was no sense in giving the kids a day...

  • Paddlefish Season To Begin May 1

    For The Courier|Apr 23, 2014

This year’s Montana paddlefish seasons will again kick off on May 1 with the opening of the Missouri River section from Fort Benton downstream to Fort Peck Dam. But the public needs to be aware that camping and other access will be limited at the James Kipp Recreation Area at the Fred Robinson Bridge south of Malta due to recent ice-jam related flooding. The area is a popular location for many paddlefish anglers and their families to base. “Anglers need to be aware that camping sites will be limited at Kipp” said Bureau of Land Manag...

  • Walleyes Bazaar & Banquet The Catch Of The Day

    Quinn Robinson, The Courier|Apr 16, 2014

The Valley Event Center was packed with vendors from wall to wall this past Saturday as the Glasgow/Fort Peck chapter of Walleyes Unlimited held it's annual bazaar. Newly elected President of the local chapter, Seth Morehouse said that an event of this magnitude takes months of preparation. "We have 52 vendors here at the bazaar this year which is right around normal for us," Morehouse said. The real highlight of the event took place later in the evening as a banquet was put on by the chapter...

  • The Guns Come Out

    Quinn Robinson, The Courier|Apr 16, 2014

It was a busy weekend for gun collectors and enthusiasts alike as the Glasgow Gun Show was held this past weekend at the Glasgow Civic Center. This is the third consecutive year that the show has been organized by Al Kwasinski. Kwasinski, a member of the Weapons Collectors of Montana, said that organizing an event like this takes months of planning. "When the vendors leave here today, a lot of them will tell me to book them for next year," Kwasinski said. He pointed out that for those who don't...

  • Glasgow Bats Come Alive In Opener

    Quinn Robinson, The Courier|Apr 16, 2014

With a new season underway, the Glasgow Scottie softball team wasted little time to continue the type of play that they have been known for the past few seasons. The Scotties opened up the season against Miles City on April 10 with an impressive 7-1 victory. Shyla Bergtoll got the win for Glasgow going five innings and allowing only one hit while recording five strikeouts. The lone sore spot on her stat line is the four walks she allowed, but as the season progresses, Bergtoll should not have many more games with that amount of walks. Wrapping...

On the girls side of the events, Glasgow saw Emily Kolstad take first in the 200 with a time of 30.4 seconds. The Scotties continued to see suc...

The dream ride was derailed in the National Tournament however as the Bozeman finished in third place in the tournament. The Ice Dogs continued their dominance in pool play of the tournament, winning their first three games. The first game saw the Bozeman squad go up against South Carolina on April 2. Virgil Vaupel, Courier Correspondent|Apr 9, 2014

It was a clear, nearly windless day for the opening meet of the 2014 track and field season for the Hinsdale Raiders. Something that was missed for the better part of last season. First up for the Hinsdale girls was Bethany Lacock with a near repeat performance from last year, winning the 100-meter, 100 hurdles, pole vault and the triple jump. She finished in third place in the high jump. Courtney Capdeville placed second behind Lacock in the pole vault adding points to the team total. For the...

  • Shed Antler Season Nearing

    Ron Selden, Region 6 FWP|Apr 9, 2014

Shed-antler hunters and other recreationists planning to visit a Montana Wildlife Management Area are reminded that while many popular WMAs open at noon on May 15, several do not open until June 1. It is illegal to enter a state WMA prior to its formal opening day. Buck deer and bull elk and moose grow antlers each year, some to magnificent size, which drop off to regrow each spring. Hunting for and collecting these “shed” antlers in spring has become a popular activity on more than 30 WMAs managed by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. Many of...
